Hurry on over to lower coast Algiers today (Sunday, May 15) to celebrate the outdoors, enjoy some arts, an auction, food and music at the FORESTival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at A Studio in the Woods (13401 Patterson Road, 392-5359; www.astudiointhewoods.org).
A Studio in the Woods is an artist-in-residence program set among a lovely forest setting in lower Algiers. Proceeds of the festival benefit All proceeds benefit A Studio in the Woods, a Tulane University program dedicated to preserving the endangered bottomland hardwood forest and providing a retreat in which artists can work.
Artists who formerly served residency programs at A Studio in the Woods will display their art throughout the day, including Jane Hill, who will have interactive clay activities, the unveiling of an outdoor sculpture by Bernard Williams, and a Spirit Ferry mobile installation by Tory Tepp. Monique Moss and Third Eye Theatre will present an original dance performance.
One of the highlights is the sale of a commemorative limited-edition sterling silver pendant of a silver field fern designed by jewelry artist Georgette Fortino. One-third of proceeds from pendant sales will benefit A Studio in the Woods.
Botanist David Baker is leading tours of the woods, and Lucianne Carmichael is giving festivalgoers tours of the green, sustainable home she and husband Joe built in the woods.
An auction includes art donated by Penny Baker, Suzanne Bennett, Ron Bechet, Teresa Cole, Jan Gilbert, Kevin McCaffrey, Andrea Myers, Larry Nevil and David Sullivan, as well as yoga sessions, dining certificates, salon services, pottery and more.
The Panorama Jazz Band, Beth Turner and jazz singer Troi Bechet will provide music at the event. Woody’s Tacos, Slice Pizzeria, Juan’s Flying Burrito and Beaucoup Sno-Balls are food vendors at the festival.
