Local trumpet players are auditioning today (Sunday, May 15) to compete in the Seeking Satchmo contest to find New Orleans’ next Louis Armstrong and the opportunity to win a fully paid trip to Berlin, Germany, in October to play with an international band at the Jazz in the Gardens of the Ministries festival and an engraved trumpet worth $3,000.
Auditions are from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park (916 N. Peters St.). Educator, trombonist, composer and producer Delfeayo Marsalis, legendary trumpeter Wendell Brunious and German musician and contest donor Thomas Gerdiken will judge the contest, which is free and open to students in the eighth through 12th grades. Each contestant will play a 20-minute musical piece during the audition.
All final contestants will perform at the Trumpet Tribute grand finale at the Satchmo SummerFest in New Orleans Aug. 7.
Organizers say the competition will continue to evolve. Prizes include opportunities for the trumpeters to perform at local and international events. First and second prize winners will get paid music jobs at the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra directed by Delfeayo Marsalis.
