Blake Lively: New Orleans sauce smuggler

Posted By on Wed, Jun 1, 2011 at 1:36 PM

Could you imagine being so famous that a mundane conversation with a friend, in which you mostly talk about how much you love each other, can earn prime real estate in one of America's top lady magazines? That is the case for actress Blake Lively (of Gossip Girl, The Town and pretty-girl-at-party fame), whose conversation with Florence and the Machine front woman Florence Welch (whom I interviewed here) was the cover story for this month's issue of Glamour. The girls mostly talked about how pretty, sweet and generally amazing each other is, but there's this one part where Lively, who spent some time in New Orleans filming Green Lantern, discusses the lengths she went in her attempts to obtain a sauce she discovered while in town.

I’m always traveling, and I get so excited when I find a new spice or a new sauce. This is absolutely crazy, but I wanted a sauce from New Orleans, and they wouldn’t send it because the FDA didn’t approve it. I called the restaurant and I said, “OK, can you buy a teddy bear and cut it open and put it in and send it?” They’re like, “No, we are not the drug cartel; we’re not sending you your sweet potato sauce in a teddy bear.”

Perhaps she's referring to Cochon Butcher's habanero sweet potato sauce?

I happen to find Lively's smuggling attempt endearing, as I know we have all done crazy things in order to have our favorite New Orleans foods, condiments and other treats when we're away (I, for example, once spent a ridiculous amount of money just to get a jug of Cool Brew shipped to me in Washington, D.C.). It also seems that Lively was by all accounts a good patron of New Orleans during her stay here. She shopped at local boutiques, bought art from local artists, and many people I talked to spotted her at Lilette and other places, as well as at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival with some Gossip Girl cast mates. So, while her abilities as an actress might be debatable, Blake Lively sure seems to like us down here.
