Le Petit Theatre board members to hold press conference Thursday morning

The ongoing drama between the board of Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre and the theater's support guild — which now has a website titled Save Le Petit — will enter a new phase tomorrow when the theater's board holds a press conference, after which there will be "a 15-minute question and answer session with board members."

Despite a series of fundraisers and some well-reviewed productions, Le Petit canceled the remainder of its season in March, leaving the future of the nearly 100-year-old community theater in question. Since then, the direction of the board has been questioned openly, with fingerpointing and angry words exchanged over the possibility of restaurateur Dickie Brennan opening an eatery in part of the space, along with a financial "angel" who claims his offer of help was spurned by the board. And that's just the most recent series of tempests in the saga of the big orange playhouse, which has been buffeted in recent years by changes in artistic directors, resignations of board members and other high-level dramarama.

Save Le Petit has an online petition electronically signed by some 1,400 supporters, including some familiar local names. The petition reads:

I want to preserve the cultural and historic integrity of Le Petit Théâtre du Vieux Carré, and I demand that the process to determine the future of the theatre be transparent. The Board of Governors must follow the bylaws of the nonprofit organization, uphold their fiduciary responsibilities and review all options to ensure the long-term sustainability of the theatre.

The announcement of tomorrow's presser concluded with "We are unable to grant individual interviews with board members after the conference." It wasn't clear whether the event would be open to the public.
