Black Feather Big Chief Lionel Delpit died Thursday July 7th of heart failure at the young age of 54. Masking as a member of the Yellow Pocahontas group before establishing the Black Feather, Delpit was renown for his elaborate suits, spirited dancing and soulful singing. He also made an appearance in Season One of HBO’s ‘Treme’, singing ‘Indian Red’ with other Big Chiefs at the home of the Wild Man who died in Katrina. Memorial Indian practice and community procession for Big Chief will be held tonight on the corner of Frenchmen and Robertson Streets. Funeral services are scheduled for tomorrow, July 16th.

A traditional Mardi Gras Indian funeral ritual and procession will follow immediately after service.
