The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) inspired some amazing works of art (Picasso's Guernica), literature (For Whom the Bell Tolls) and film (Pan's Labyrinth). It's also the subject of The Last Circus, which is getting higher marks from critics than audiences. The cryptic story is an orgy of sadism involving a battle between a happy clown and a sad clown and intrigue over a beautiful and masochistic acrobat, all under the long shadow cast by Franco's regime. Sounds awesome. It opens at Chalmette Movies tonight.
