Music documentaries in the New Orleans Film Festival

Several notable documentaries about music screen in the final days of the 2011 New Orleans Film Festival. There's a free screening at 6:30 p.m. tonight of Rejoice and Shout at the Ashe Cultural Arts Center. The documentary links gospel to a wide variety of musical genres as well as the Civil Rights movement. There's footage of Mahalia Jackson as well as many other gospel and pop and R&B performers. At 8 p.m. tonight, Music from the Big House screens at the CAC. It explores music behind the bars of the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola. There's a second screening (9:20 p.m. Thursday, Theatres at Canal Place) of Danny Clinch's documentary about My Morning Jacket and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Live at Preservation Hall: Louisiana Fairytale.

Other music related films and documentaries include The Swell Season (7 p.m. Thursday, Zeitgeist) about folk musicians Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, who appeared in the indie hit Once. Beatboxing: The Fifth Element of Hip Hop screens at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Contemporary Arts Center.
