Roddy White thinks "Penn state is wrong" to fire a coach who neglected to tell police that a child was sexually abused

Roddy White is apparently a poor judge of character

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White sent the tweets pictured above after news reports indicated Pennsylvania State University football head coach Joe Paterno was dismissed by the school's board of trustees in relation to the sordid child sex abuse accusations leveled one of Paterno's former assistant coaches, Jerry Sandusky.

It can be safely assumed that either White is an idiot, doesn't care about child sex abuse, or hasn't read the grand jury report implicating Sandusky of abusing children since the early 1990s. Considering White has three kids of his own, we can presumably rule out the second scenario. White's past would indicate that the first assumption is the most obvious. But, in all honesty, our money is on him being an idiot AND that he doesn't read grand jury reports.

To be completely fair, Paterno has done a lot for his school. But all the lobbying for library funds in the world doesn't make up for all Paterno didn't do when presented with an eyewitness account of one of his former assistants and long-time friend sexually assaulting a young boy in the Penn State football team's showers. From the grand jury report:

"Joseph V. Paterno testified to receiving the graduate assistant's report at his home on a Saturday morning. Paterno testified that the graduate assistant was very upset. Paterno called Tim Curly ... Penn State Athletic Director and Paterno's immediate superior, to his home the very next day, a Sunday, and reported to him that the graduate assistant had seen Jerry Sandusky in the Lasch Building showers fondling or doing something of a sexual nature to a young boy."

Paterno didn't call the police — as is currently required by Pennsylvania State Law and is obvious to anyone with even the vaguest moral compass — and apparently conducted no follow-up investigation (the grand jury report states that Paterno didn't participate in any of the subsequent meetings between the graduate student and Penn State officials about the incident). That incident occurred in 2002. It wasn't until six years later that a coach alerted the police of Sandusky's misconduct. It just so happened to have been a wrestling coach who caught Sandusky in strange situations with a different boy.

White is joined by the local news media covering the event, a few hundred (hopefully-not-hopelessly) misguided Penn State students and this dumb-ass in thinking that Paterno, by virtue of winning a few hundred football games and still coaching despite being very old, should be excused for not doing more when confronted with the information that a child was sexually abused in his football team's showers (really, that point can't be stressed enough).

To Roddy White (and really anyone who's ignoring the horror the alleged victims and their families have gone through and are thinking instead of Paterno's legacy and/or how Penn State will play on Saturday) on behalf of the world: Shut up and stop being an idiot.

Evidently, you are the idiot. What is required by state law is that your superior be notified, which is what Paterno did. Paterno was not Sandusky's supervisor at that time, and no organization shares investigation details or even if an investigation is taking place, with people who do not need-to-know. Paterno was not in a position to need-to-know. He was presented with VAGUE accusations and he passed those on to someone who was in a position to actually do some investigating before deciding if misconduct occured. Remember the Day Care child abuse scandals in the 80's? How many innocent people spent decades in prison for abuse that never occured? If you're going to accuse someone of something to law enforcement, you damn sure better make sure it's true before you start making accusations. The lawyers for some of the abuse victims have even complained about the Paterno's firing because the victims were not consulted. What you, yes you, and everyone else are doing is ignoring the victims because you need to blame someone and Joe Paterno is the biggest name you can find. He was an old, half-senile man, even then, who was told that someone "may have witnessed something sexual". He did what he thought was best. And people like you crucifying him now when he's spent longer than your lifetime trying to help young people is not only idiotic, but it is a disservice to the victims. Why don't you do some real research on Paterno and actually read the Grand Jury report yourself before you make yourself look like a complete dumbass to the entire world.

AND now can someone else to tell Roddy White to keep his ignorant comments to himself, OR just maybe he is OR was a victim at one time. Otherwise he need to SHUT THE HELL UP.

When the abuse happened, Paterno was not mandated to report. Not to say that he exercised good judgment, but when the reporting mandate did become law, was he then bound to report the prior incident ex post facto? He did what he, at the time, was legally bound to do. Legally ok, judgmentally seriously impaired. He is too old to be working anyway. He should be playing pickle ball in Boca. If he is not going to be charged or investigated further, our focus and outrage should be centered on the true (alleged, I guess) villains, those who have been brought up on legal charges. That we can deal with. We can't adjudicate moral judgment. That'll come in due time. Sooner for the octagenarians involved

couldnt have said it better patrick. he did everything he was required to do under the law, it is an absolutley horrific thing that happened but he took care of the legal end. regardless of whether he should have done more morally or not, he did what was required of him. that being said, i hope sandusky gets the maximum punishment the law allows
