I got pretty excited when I found an old email about an online raffle for the pink shoes New Orleans Saints punter Thomas Morstead wore when he set a record by making nine touchbacks in a single game — in the 62-7 victory over the Indianapolis Colts Oct. 23. The 62 points tied a record for the most scored by any team since the AFL merged with the NFL in 1970.
The donation of the pink shoes with gold cleats was Morstead’s show of support for National Breast Cancer Month in October, a cause supported throughout the NFL. My excitement grew as I realized I still have a chance to enter — the online raffle doesn’t end until 11 a.m. TOMORROW, Sunday, Nov. 20. The tickets are inexpensive: $2 each with a minimum purchase of five for $10, available online only at www.PuntPink.com. The winner will be notified the same day the raffle ends.
The shoes are a perfect holiday gift for a certain hard-core Saints fan I know — but that’s not all the winner gets.
The Morstead Pink Package includes the pink-cleat kicking shoes he wore during the game as part of the, the football he kicked, one pre-game field pass to meet Morstead before the Saints vs. Giants matchup in the Superdome Nov. 28, and two seats in the club section for that game.
Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the New Orleans and Acadiana chapters of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, which funds cancer research and programs for cancer patients.
Morstead, whose mother is a breast cancer survivor and avid Saints fan, sought help from Oncologics, a cancer treatment center based in Lafayette, to set up the fundraiser and PuntPink.com.
