Fat Hen trims down

The former Fat Hen Grill in Harahan.

Fat Hen Grill, the predecessor and sister restaurant to Fat Hen Grocery, which was reviewed recently, closed last week.

Chef/owner Shane Prichett shut down the Harahan restaurant, and a press release issued by his restaurant today explains that the move is intended “to consolidate his team’s efforts and focus his attention solely on the Fat Hen Grocery.”

Prichett opened Fat Hen Grocery along St. Charles Avenue near the Uptown universities in July, and operated both for the past four months. While the menus were largely the same, the Harahan restaurant had more barbecue items while the Uptown location added a deli for take-out sandwiches and a small grocery area for packaged foods and meats by the pound.

The Harahan location was one chapter in of an evolving “fine diner” concept Prichett launched after leaving the high ranks of upscale New Orleans dining. A formally trained chef originally from Texas, he had worked his way up to become one of Emeril Lagasse’s lieutenants, eventually serving as chef du cuisine at Emeril’s Delmonico. He opened his first Fat Hen Grill at a different location in Harahan and soon expanded with a second Fat Hen Grill in Kenner. Both of these eateries closed and he opened at his most recent Fat Hen Grill on Hickory Avenue amid a cluster of other restaurants.

In his press release announcing the closing, Prichett says that in addition to concentrating on Fat Hen Grocery he plans to devote more time to a line of bottled barbecue sauces and jams he’s been selling and also “participate in barbecue competitions around the United States.”

Fat Hen Grocery has also expanded its hours, adding service on Tuesdays to offer breakfast, lunch and dinner daily now.
