American Institute of Architects' DesCours expo opens

The New Orleans chapter of the American Institute of Architects opens its DesCours show to the public Saturday. The annual expo brings architects from around the country to the city to create installations exploring architectural ideas and materials. Many of the downtown exhibits will be open from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. Saturday, along with art openings on Julia and Magazine Streets. Visit the website for a list of exhibits, locations and participating architects. There also are events, including a happy hour with a DJ Wednesday from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. at the exhibit at 1445 Pauger St. There is a guided tour of installations on Friday, Dec. 9 (departs from the AIA offices at 1000 St. Charles Ave. at 7:30 p.m.).

This year's DesCours was a huge disappointment in both the quality of the installations and the selection of the locations (too many overlit condo/loft spaces, nothing in the French Quarter, etc.) Hope they manage to do better next time - judging from previous years, it's definitely capable of being something special.
