Generationals "Ten Twenty-Ten," the bouncy single from this year's LP Actor-Caster, made No. 6 on Paste's "50 Best Songs of 2011," edging out Tom Waits and Wilco, at numbers 7 and 8.

And GIVERS' "Up Up Up" made No. 29 on that list. The Lafayette astro-Afro-pop band also made Paste's "25 Best Live Acts of 2011" list, coming in at 22 — topping Paul Simon, even. The band's debut album In Light made Amazon.com's Best Music of 2011 list, cracking the top 20 at No. 11.

Trombone Shorty moved into Downbeat's top five trombone players in its annual readers' poll, and Allen Toussaint was named among the poll's best arrangers.

Mississippi rapper Big K.R.I.T.'s acclaimed "mixtape" Return of 4Eva made Rolling Stone's best albums of 2011 list, at 32. The album also was ranked by SPIN as the 5th best rap album of 2011. New Orleans rapper and K.R.I.T collaborator Curren$y entered that "40 best rap albums" list with his Covert Coup, which cracked into the top 20 at the No. 19 spot — and former No Limit soldier Fiend, another Curren$y and K.R.I.T. pal, made that list with his self-released mixtape Tennis Shoes & Tuxedos, named the 12th best rap album of 2011.

Baton Rouge-New Orleans doom conjurers Thou entered Pitchfork's top metal albums of 2011.
