Krewe du Vieux announces new route

Now that football's over, we segue neatly into Mardi Gras — and one of its opening acts, the Krewe du Vieux, which rolls Sat. Feb. 4 on a slightly amended route through the Faubourg Marigny and French Quarter.

This year's theme is "Crimes Against Nature," and the grand marshal is Deon Haywood, executive director of Women With a Vision New Orleans, a group whose stated mission is to "improve the lives of marginalized women." (That's about as political as KdV has ever gotten.)

With the stated theme, expect a lot of satirical, explicit floats about Louisiana's archaic sodomy laws (yes, leave the kids at home ... eh, you never listen, and there are always a few horrified parents and puzzled toddlers along the route), and a raucous after-parade ball — held this year at Project Restore Habitat for Humanity (2830 Royal St.). The rest of the info is on the Krewe du Vieux website.

And now: meet the new route, same as similar to the old route. Click to embiggen the details (including directions from the "Benz-Over Dome" and the "Dollar General Hospital"):

The raunchy, satirical parade that's one of the early kickoffs of Carnival season rolls Sat. Feb. 4.
