Review: Color Me Obsessed, a film about The Replacements

Posted by Ken Korman on Fri, Jan 20, 2012 at 4:34 PM

For those of us of a certain age and temperament, there were few things as crucial and meaningful in the 1980s as a little rock’n’roll band from Minneapolis called The Replacements. It’s hard to explain what was so mesmerizing and heart-rending about the band, but that doesn’t mean one shouldn’t try. Color Me Obsessed does just that: over the course of two hours, fans, friends, and collaborators share insights and memories of the only band in history that could be the best and the worst you’ve ever seen—not only over the course of a night, but sometimes within the space of a single song.

The uninitiated may be at a loss here. The film includes no music, concert footage, or participation by the band. But Color Me Obsessed isn’t really interested in convincing anyone of The Replacements’ epic greatness. It’s more about the subjective fan experience of the band than the band itself. And that is something no one can deny.

Color Me Obsessed will be shown tonight and Saturday night at 9:00 p.m at Zeitgeist Multi-Disciplinary Arts Center, 1618 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd in New Orleans. A Q&A with director Gorman Bechard will follow each screening.

This movie was so boring and unrelatable to anyone who hadn't heard the replacements. Since they don't play the music the entire film, it's like waiting for godeaux-- i was waiting for something that never came. Not to mention, the poor editing, I mean there are like 5 shots of pasty white guy thigh during interviews, it was awkward, couldn't he crop that out? If you're going to spend $7, go buy the replacements cd and spare yourself the 2 hours.
