Six new movies open in New Orleans this weekend

Posted By on Thu, Feb 2, 2012 at 3:43 PM

There's something for just about everyone arriving on local screens this weekend. The biggest news is director Steve McQueen's Shame, which has been delayed twice over the past few weeks. There's a price to be paid for getting shut out of the Oscar nominations, no matter what the critics say about a particular film.

SHAME
This harrowing NC-17 portrait of a sex addict in New York City is not for the timid, but it's hard to deny the film's unsettling power. Read our full review here. At The Theatres at Canal Place.

MORE MOVIES AFTER THE JUMP...

THE CITY DARK
A love letter to the night sky, this entertaining and thought-provoking documentary explores the invisible price we pay for shutting out the dark with 24/7 artificial light. Look for a full review in next week's Gambit. At Zeitgeist Multi-Disciplinary Arts Center.

KING OF DEVIL'S ISLAND
This Norwegian film recounts the true story of an inmate uprising at the infamous Bastoy correctional facility for boys. At Zeitgeist Multi-Disciplinary Arts Center.

BIG MIRACLE
It's Drew Barrymore to the rescue when whales get trapped under the ice in Alaska. Wide release.

CHRONICLE
Teenagers acquire superhuman powers with predictably messy results. Wide release.

THE WOMAN IN BLACK
Based on Susan Hill's 1983 novel, the film tells of a ghost terrorizing children in an English village. Wide release.
