Mississippi rep introduces the "Gulf of America" bill

Posted by Alex Woodward on Wed, Feb 8, 2012 at 9:50 AM

Riding upon a chariot of Hummers driven by bald eagles, Mississippi Rep. Steve Holland filed a guns blazing cowboy steak of a bill, proudly waving our nation's red, white and God-fearing blue to protect our American coastal waters. This week, Holland introduced H.B. 150 to Mississippi's House of Representatives Marine Resources Committee — a bill that, in summary, would "for all official purposes" rename the Gulf of Mexico (or "body of water south of Mississippi") the "Gulf of America."

For all official purposes within the State of Mississippi, the body of water that is located directly south of Hancock, Harrison and Jackson Counties shall be known as the "Gulf of America." ... This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2012.

And just in time for the Fourth of July weekend.

Note: Here's an unrelated take on a "Gulf of America," one which very-serious pundit man Stephen Colbert says, "I don't think we can call it the Gulf of Mexico anymore. We broke it, we bought it."

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!

As if Mississippi and the US didn't have truly important issues to worry about.... an economic crisis, the numbers of poor people (and homeless) growing and of the middle class diminishing, Americans losing their homes and not being able to get loans from banks, education losing funds, cleaning the pollution in the Gulf of Mexico and helping fishing communities get stronger, the war in Afghanistan still on, high gas prices, crisis in Europe and other nations that could potentially have a disastrous impact on the USA.... ... ....

Those and many other issues are the ones that really demand the attention of elected officials. This bill could be interpreted as a slap on the face of Mexico--our neighbor friend, ally and important trade partner to the south--and even most (if not all) of the Latin American nations who could ask what they can expect from the US next. Not to mention the rest of the world.

MISSISSIPPIANS: Please say no to nonsense and political distractions, and save the pride you have in your state.

Fine. Then I vote to rename Mississippi Rep. Steve Holland, Moron LaDouche.

um, not to mention that it's an international body of water. The US can't unilaterally rename it no matter what Holland thinks.

This IS good news for Gregg Harper -this means he's no longer the dumbest rep from the Mississippi delegation.

It IS a joke. It is Steve Holland. He is our hero. How could this possibly be a real bill? If Steve Holland was Republican, that's how. So, AMERICA 2012, ccc423, SalParadise and Velo... get a grip and research more before proclaiming your ignorance. Moron LaDouche, indeed. Who's the LaDouche now?

Another wasted use of time. Are we really paying these jerks to come up with bills like this? People are out of work, they need food... and this is what he comes up with? Guess Congress is trying to get to 7% approval rating

Mississippi Rep. Stevie Holland is an idiot, he has no concept of what an open meeting is or what his authority is, he needs to be sentured by Legistlature and the people of Mississippi should recall him for his complete stupidity and a waste of tax payers dollars!

Thanks the good Lord our government has fixed all of our other problems. Well, they must have right, how else would they have time to waste on this stuff, real or a joke!

To Acey49...I don't care one way or another about the Bill introduced to rename the Gulf of Mexico, but I do have an opinion about you. Southern bastards have more class than any damn yankee I've ever met. Most of the ones I've met are ignorant, arrogant, bigoted, classless, cold, mean people with a chip on their shoulder....just like you. Yep all these descriptions fit you to a tee. I don't even have to see you to read you.

To Velo: The Gulf of Mexico becomes an International body of water only after it crosses the outer continental shelf (OCS). Which means from the shore to the OCS it is not an international body of water. JFYI

Hey Y'all dissenters: Holland presented a JOKE of a bill. It is poking fun at the Republican controlled Miss. House of Reps, and all there "Americun" pride. This is pure southern sarcasm at it's finest. Honestly, those of you who comment here w/o a lick of knowledge on this subject
are as dumb as a sack of hammers.
