Foburg kicks off tonight

The New Orleans Indie Rock Collective's third installment of foburg. kicks off tonight with its usual mix of touring acts en route to SXSW and local bands, plus the new addition of film screenings and comedy shows.

Brooklyn punk duo Japanther headlines tonight's offerings at a show at the Hi-Ho Lounge also featuring Seattle transplants The Pharmacy and local dance party commanders Jean-Eric. Later that night Siberia is the site for an ass-tranvaganza with local bounce luminaries Big Freedia, Katey Red, Sissy Nobby, Nicky Da B and others.

Chicago indie rockers Maps & Atlases headline a show Saturday at One Eyed Jacks flanked by locals Sun Hotel and Caddywhompus. The Baltimore-based J. Roddy Walston & the Business plays The Maison that night with Michigan multi-instrumentalist David Vandervelde, Nashville pop-rock combo The Features and local Americana act Coyotes. Local bands including alt-rock stalwarts Rotary Downs to a duo of cellist Helen Gillet and jazz guitarist Cliff Hines play showcases at d.b.a. and the Hi-Ho, respectively.

Both Saturday and Sunday, WTUL hosts a showcase at Michalopoulos Studio with a large slate of local and touring acts, the latter including Boston's You Won't on Sunday.

On Friday and Saturday, the newly-opened New Movement Theater (read Alex Woodward's profile on TNM here) is the homebase for foburg.comedy featuring New York/Los Angeles-by-way-of-New Orleans stand-up Sean Patton, as well as comedian Kyle Kinane and other guests.

Time Code NOLA and Powdered Sugar produce the foburg.film aspect of the fest, and film screenings are held at Lost Love Lounge, Mimi's in the Marigny and the gravel lot at 524 Frenchmen St. throughout the weekend. Read more about foburg.film here.
