One of the most intriguing art openings of Fall 2011 was that of The Music Box (aka Dithyrambalina; aka "a shantytown sound laboratory"), a joint music and art installation of treehouse or phonebooth-sized music boxes created on a lot in Bywater (1027 Piety St.). The salvaged remains of a demolished home were turned into a cluster of musically equipped structures, and a series of orchestral collaborations was presented.

The project featured artwork by New York artist Swoon and many local artists from New Orleans Airlift. Musical programs featured Hamid Drake, Mannie Fresh, James Singleton, Helen Gillet, Quintron and others.

The New Orleans Airlift collective announced that The Music Box will reopen April 14 during the St. Claude Avenue gallery walk. It will be open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays from April 20 to June 2, and a schedule of events to take place during Jazz Fest is expected.

The Music Box was widely covered in the press: Gambit, NPR, The New York Times, Artnet and elsewhere.
