A second-line parade at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, kicks off public events at the third annual New Orleans Traditional Jazz Camp for Adults, which draws musicians from around the world interested in learning old-style New Orleans jazz. The parade, which will include 104 “campers,” starts at the intersection of Bourbon and Orleans streets in the French Quarter.

Musicians attending the camp will present a free concert at 7 p.m. Friday, June 15 at the Bourbon Orleans Hotel (717 Orleans St.; www.bourbonorleans.com), and a free festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 16 at Palm Court Jazz Cafe (1204 Decatur St.; www.palmcourtjazzcafe.com). Both are open to the public.

The music camp, which started Sunday, has drawn attendees from 28 states as well as Argentina, Canada, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Scotland and the U.K. This year, 12 local students were awarded scholarships to attend the camp.

The camp was started “to promote, perpetuate and preserve the music that was born in the Birthplace of Jazz,” according to a mission statement by local musicians Banu Gibson, Leslie Cooper and Nita Hemeter, who founded the camp in 2009. Instructors at this year’s weeklong camp include Gibson, Otis Bazoon, David Boeddinghaus, Leah Chase, Gerald French, Connie Jones, Carl LeBlanc, Dan Levinson, Kerry Lewis, Ray Moore, Matt Perrine, Ed Polcer and David Sager, who work with campers during the day. At night, they jam in clubs or at the Bourbon Orleans Hotel. One of those performances is Levinson, a renowned clarinetist, who will play at Sung Harbor (626 Frenchmen St.) at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Thursday, June 14th. That performance isn’t free.
