Siberia suspends performance schedule

Posted By on Fri, Jul 13, 2012 at 3:40 PM

Siberia announced on its Facebook page this afternoon that the St. Claude Avenue music venue is "putting a hold on live entertainment."

The kitchen, Kukhnya, which slings "Slavic soul food," remains open, as does the bar. But its regular rotation and nightly performances from some of the best (local, national and international) metal, punk and hard rock bands, as well as singer songwriters and bounce artists, is on hold.

Siberia co-partner Daphne Loney says there is confusion whether the club is in St. Roch, Marigny or New Marigny neighborhoods as designed by the city's zoning ordinances, which affects the types of entertainment they can host. (Current assessor information has the property listed as New Marigny.) The City's Department of Revenue first made Siberia aware of their incorrect live music permit application.

The staff has scheduled a meeting with District C councilwoman Kristin Gisleson Palmer, and they're waiting to appear before City Council to hear their permit issues and apply for a conditional use permit allowing performances. The club also started a petition: "I want live entertainment at Siberia!"

Loney says fans should rest assured — the city is working diligently with the bar, she says, and they expect to get their proper permits. "We just want to get everything straight," Loney says.

Siberia's installment of this weekend's Creepy Fest schedule (8 p.m. Saturday, July 14) has relocated to Hi-Ho Lounge down the street. And next weekend's big Record Raid event is still on at Siberia — just without the DJs.
