Update on New Orleans Immigration Court's case backlog

Posted By on Wed, Aug 1, 2012 at 9:55 AM

In this week's cover story, we cited the most recent statistics available on New Orleans Immigration Court's case backlog (3,373 pending cases in June) and local closures under the Immigration and Customs Enforcement's 2011 prosecutorial discretion (PD) guidelines (3 between September 2011 and the end of May 2012). These numbers came from Syracuse University's TRAC Immigration.

Gambit requested more recent statistics from the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR), which administers immigration courts. EOIR was unable to provide those numbers by press time, but this week, spokeswoman Kathryn Mattingly responded with the information, current as of July 26. According to Mattingly, PD closures are up in New Orleans, as is the court's pending caseload.

July 30 email from Mattingly:

EOIR official statistics show that as of July 26, 2012, the New Orleans Immigration Court had 3,420 pending proceedings. Also, EOIR official statistics show that between Nov. 17, 2011, and July 26, 2012, 13 cases were administratively closed as part of DHS’s prosecutorial discretion initiative. Please note that prosecutorial discretion statistics are subject to change as cases that fall under this initiative continue.
