Kakkoii Japanese Bistreaux opens Uptown

There’s no lack of Japanese restaurants around Uptown, but to my knowledge a newcomer on Maple Street is our first “Japanese bistreaux.” That would be Kakkoii Japanese Bistreaux, which opened on Maple Street late in August.

The menu has the standard array of rolls, Japanese appetizers and teriyaki and noodle dishes but it also makes room for offbeat numbers like fish tacos with tempura-battered whitefish and pickled cucumbers and “monki ribs,” which are baby back ribs with a sweet Japanese-style barbecue glaze. There are also a few Thai fishes, like papaya salad, tom yum soup and pad Thai.

Most of the standard rolls are between $5 and $6, while what Kakkoii calls its “designer rolls” are priced in the low- to mid-teens. One example of these is the volcano roll, with “tamago (egg), avocado and asparagus topped with baked chili-scallop, crunchies, masago (roe), scallions and eel sauce.”

The restaurant’s name, pronounced (roughly) “ka-koy-ee,” is Japanese slang for something cool. It’s the first restaurant from a group of partners that include James Vu and Toan Tran, whose family runs Pho NOLA, a Vietnamese noodle shop in Metairie.

Kakkoii’s address was most recently a pizzeria and bar called Doors, though some will still surely remember the location as the long-time home of the Mexican restaurant Vera Cruz. The space has been given a thorough overall with a contemporary design.

There’s a happy hour from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, at the bar and sushi bar only, with $3 sushi rolls and drink specials.

Kakkoii serves lunch Tuesday through Friday, dinner Tuesday through Sunday and it stays open until midnight on Friday and Saturday.
