Slow Food, an international organization for local and traditional foods, celebrates its Terra Madre (“Mother Earth”) Day each year on Dec. 10, when its various chapters around the world each hold their own events. Last year, these numbered over 1,000 celebrations in 125 countries and this year New Orleans will have its own Terra Madre Day event once again too.

After a two-year hiatus, Slow Food New Orleans was re-launched this past fall and on Dec. 10, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., the local group will host a Terra Madre Day event at Cleaver & Co., the new, whole-animal butcher shop Uptown.

Visitors will find a number of stations inside and outside the shop, where Cleaver & Co. butcher Kris Doll will conduct demonstrations of his craft, staff from Swirl Wine Bar & Market will pour tastings of biodynamic (or traditionally-made) wines from the Oregon-based distributor Bizou Wines and local Slow Food chairman Gary Granata and fellow nutritionist Casey Miller will prepare dishes to eat on the spot.

The butchering demo costs $10, the wine tasting costs $10 and dishes costs $5 or $10, with separate tickets available for each. Meanwhile, the Small Batch String Band will perform during the party.

“The idea is you can just come by and have a healthy meal for $5 or $10 or you can do the butchering demo, have a wine tasting and get dinner,” says Granata. “We wanted options to appeal to everyone.”

Launched in Italy in 1986, Slow Food was conceived as a response to the rise of fast food and industrialized food in Europe, and local chapters spread across the world. New Orleans food maven Poppy Tooker founded the first New Orleans chapter in 1999.

Memberships are available at the Dec. 10 event.
