The holiday season is a time for festive meals in New Orleans. But even if you don’t have time for a long lunch with coworkers or can’t drop the cash for a multi-course reveillon dinner, the somewhat newer tradition of the restaurant happy hour could be just the thing.
That’s why for the past few years I’ve put together Five in 5 lists of good restaurant happy hours in December. But with so many more restaurants now offering these deals, I’m expanding the coverage this year. What follows is a primer on 22 of the options out there now. This doesn’t include “wing night” at the sports bar, the early bird dinner special or discounts on drinks only — instead, the focus is on restaurants with food specials at happy hour, which usually offered at their bars. In almost every case below, there is also a drink special, something in the neighborhood of half-price cocktails or $5 wines and $3 beers and so forth.
Some notes: the Besh Restaurant Group has made happy hours a hallmark of most of its downtown properties (a half-price pizza from Domenica’s wood-fired oven with half-priced glasses from its Italian wine list might be the most appealing offer in town), while some happy hours repeat or extend to the late-night side of the normal dinner hour (see Chiba for a bingo card of happy hour openings or Morton’s the next time you leave a film at the nearby Theatres at Canal Place). The Three Muses has live music at its happy hour, and during its happy hour the bar at RioMar approaches the platonic ideal of Spanish tapas — quick, inexpensive and highly social.
Call for more details, respect the rules, tip generously and have yourself a merry little happy hour.
