A wine dinner guest from beyond the grave

As the victor of the Battle of New Orleans, Andrew Jackson is remembered around the city he successfully defended in monuments and landmarks. Next week, his ill-fated opponent, the British general Edward Pakenham, will be remembered in a much different way — at a wine dinner with a historic theme.

On Jan. 10, the Hotel Mazarin will host “Pakenham’s Last Supper” at Louis XVI, the former restaurant inside the French Quarter hotel that is now used as an events venue. Long-time Louis XVI chef Agnes Bellet will prepare a five-course meal of dishes intended to recreate what would have been served at an official function in the early 19th century. The dinner, which will be served by candlelight, includes wine.

The meal is part of an ongoing series of events marking the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 and leading up to the bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans, which was fought outside the city between December 1814 and January 1815. Pakenham, who led the would-be British invasion force against New Orleans, was killed during the battle. Still, he’s scheduled to make an appearance at this wine dinner, as one of several costumed historical re-enactors included in the evening’s program.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. with a cocktail hour with cash bar, followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $129. For reservations call 504-200-3113.
