Former Pentecostal preacher documentary gets Kickstarter funding

Jerry DeWitt, the atheist "preacher" who I profiled in last week's Gambit, is the subject of the documentary The Outcast of Beauregard Parish by filmmakers Jason Cohn and Camille Servan-Schreiber. A Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the project reached its $30,000 goal, with more than 20 days still left to meet its deadline.

The Outcast of Beauregard Parish chronicles DeWitt's journey from small-town preacher to recently outed atheist, working with Freedom from Religion and The Clergy Project to assist other clergy members with similar experiences. The documentary intends to capture DeWitt "struggling to make sense of a new philosophical landscape. ... Unwelcome in the church and ill-at-ease among firebrand atheists, Jerry is a man without a country."

The filmmakers plan to release the documentary next year. Read an excerpt from DeWitt's memoir, Hope After Faith, here. The book is out June 25.
