Collaboration is a thriving trend among Louisiana breweries. NOLA Brewing has worked with Stone and New Belgium, Bayou Teche has two international collaborations in the works and now a local brewpub has announced the first brewpub-brewery collaboration in the state by brewing a beer with Georgia-based Terrapin Brewing, new to the Louisiana market as of this week.
Head brewer Matthew Horney worked at Terrapin before heading up brewery operations at the Old Rail, and says the idea for a collaboration took hold when the Terrapin team came to visit the brewpub while in town finalizing arrangements for its upcoming distribution. “We discussed the Terrapin release date and thought it would be fun to do it as a celebration of our friendship as well as their introduction to the market,” says Horney.
The beer will be a blood orange black IPA, incorporating local produce, which was an important element in planning the recipe, according to Horney. They will be using fresh orange zest in the brewing process. In choosing the black IPA style, Horney says, “I love roasted malts and bold flavors and Terrapin is big on hops so it seemed like a good fit.” The release date of this beer has not been finalized, but will likely be in mid-February.
Terrapin beer releases are planned all over town this week. On Jan. 13, The Avenue Pub will have Terrapin’s flagship IPA Hopsecutioner, as well as Moo Hoo Chocolate Milk Stout, Barrel-Aged Monks Revenge Belgian IPA, Rye Pale Ale and Wake & Bake Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout; The Bulldog in Mid-City will have So Fresh & So Green, Green fresh hop IPA; and the Bulldog Uptown will have Oaked Big Hoppy Monster.
On Thursday, the Freret Street corridor will debut Terrapin at Ancora, Midway, Wayfare, and the Publiq House. After the rollout, only Hopsecutioner will be available to the market, for the time being.
