American Hustle and Gravity lead Oscars race with 10 nominations each

Posted By on Thu, Jan 16, 2014 at 8:42 AM

There were few real surprises this morning when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its nominations for the 2014 Oscars. David O. Russell's American Hustle and Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity led the pack with 10 nominations each, and Steve McQueen's locally made 12 Years a Slave followed closely with nine nominations. American Hustle received nominations in all four major acting categories, a rare feat managed just last year by Russell's Silver Linings Playbook. (The last film to achieve this before Russell's recent streak was Warren Beatty's Reds in 1981.) Nine films were nominated for Best Picture for the third time in a row since the Academy changed its rules to allow anywhere from five to 10 nominees in the category based on each year's voting.

The winners will be announced on Sunday night, March 2. A complete list of nominees is available here.
