Spike Lee on gentrification

Posted By Google on Wed, Feb 26, 2014 at 6:38 PM

Spike Lee talked about (Alex Woodward has made me hate the word "rant") gentrification for roughly seven minutes last night at an event at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y., the city where he was raised. Most of the effects of gentrification Lee pointed out could also be pointed out by New Orleanians: reverse migrationchanging neighborhood names and boundariesnewcomers with high expectations, newcomers wanting to stop practices that have been in place for years, what constitutes garbage, "Christopher Columbus syndrome," being priced out, neighborhoods finally getting standard amenities when new people move in, etc.

Lee's spiel is embedded below.
