Dr. John may not be playing Jazz Fest this year, but he'll be playing locally
during Jazz Fest, and the venue and lineup are both stellar.
“The Musical Mojo of Dr. John: A Celebration of Mac & His Music"
is a one-night-only gig at the Saenger Theater
, and the lineup of artists playing tribute to Dr. John include Gregg Allman, Tab Benoit, Ryan Bingham, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Chief Monk Boudreaux, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Bill Kreutzmann, Chuck Leavell, Shannon McNally, Zigaboo Modeliste, Sarah Morrow, Cyril Neville, Anders Osborne, George Porter Jr., Mavis Staples, Allen Toussaint, Lucinda Williams, Irma Thomas, Jimmie Vaughan and Widespread Panic.
Musical director of the night will be Don Was, and Dr. John himself is expected to take the stage at some point. The show will be taped and shown later.
Tickets go on sale
Mon. March 10. No word yet on cost — but if you can't afford it, there's always Dr. John's planned appearance at French Quarter Festival
April 11, which is free (and bound to be crowded).
