Drama — and not the character from the HBO series Entourage — was in full effect in the sports world this week. Pierre Thomas was getting released by the New Orleans Saints. Then he wasn’t ... or was he? Then he inked for 2 more years

Saints running back Darren Sproles would be released or traded. He requested to be let go so he could choose his next team. Sproles’ wife Michel went off on Instagram about the way the Saints treated her husband and Twitter went nuts. Why did Twitter go crazy over that story? I have no idea. Why does Twitter go crazy over anything?

Anyway, that was this week in part of the sports world. Here’s what coming up this weekend everywhere else around town.

New Orleans Saints

Mickey Loomis and friends will continue to closely monitor free agency this weekend. With the team signing safety Jairus Byrd earlier this week, the black and gold will still look to replace the losses in the secondary and on both the offensive and defensive lines. The obvious question is, who do they sign next? Only the folks on Airline truly know. However, my question is this. Does anyone run the salary cap better than the Saints? Loomis and his team are VERY good. Hopefully, the team can hold onto Loomis’ staff because they are fantastic.

Prediction – Who wins – Prediction is the team signs a center this weekend. I actually got something right last week when I mentioned the team would sign a safety. We'll see if my good luck continues.

Prediction #2 – Some company will have “Byrd is the Word” shirts for sale right before the Saints season starts. Think like this:

New Orleans Pelicans (26-38)

The Pelicans have won three of their last four and are coming off a 90-88 loss to Memphis Wednesday night. The Pels were short handed again Wednesday night. This time Tyreke Evans and Eric Gordon were both sick and could not play. Coincidentally, the Pels won those 3 games with Evans in the starting lineup. Both players should be back this weekend as the team looks for a win Friday night.

Friday March 14 vs Portland 7 pm (FSNO)
Sunday March 16 @ Boston 5 pm (FSNO)

Prediction - Who wins? Pelicans split the games this weekend. Pels drop the game tonight at home vs the Trailblazers, however come back to beat the Celtics in Boston Sunday.

New Orleans Zephyrs

The Zephyrs will be in Jupiter, Fla. this weekend continuing with spring training games all weekend and into next week. Schedule of those games can be found here.

LSU Football

The Tigers are still in full spring practice mode. It will finish up Saturday, April 5 with their annual spring game in Tiger Stadium. David Ching of ESPN has a nice piece about the team and what’s going on with the Tigers during spring practice.

LSU Basketball (19-12)

The Tigers easily defeated Alabama last night in the first round of the SEC basketball tournament 68-56. It’s not surprising that the team won, but how they won and competed. LSU was in control the entire time and hitting a season-high 11 three pointers didn’t hurt their cause either. LSU moves onto the second round of the tournament tonight when they take on Kentucky. The Tigers split home games with Kentucky this year, most recently with a 77-76 overtime loss to the Wildcats on February 22. Should the Tigers win, they’ll take on the winner of the Ole Miss - Georgia game that occurs after their matchup with Kentucky.

Prediction - Who wins? Think big or go home, right? LSU not only defeats Kentucky, but moves on to the SEC Championship game Sunday vs Florida. Unfortunately, their good showing in the SEC tournament doesn’t get them into big dance, but they’ll get into the NIT tournament.

LSU Baseball (16-2)

The 8th ranked LSU baseball Tigers have won 7 in a row, most recently an 8-0 blanking of Southern Wednesday night in Alex Box Stadium. This weekend they’ve got a tough series in Nashville, Tennessee vs 7th ranked Vanderbilt. Junior right-hander Aaron Nola (4-0, 0.00 ERA) takes on Vandy right-hander Tyler Beede (4-0, 1.08 ERA). Both pitchers are considered to be high Major League Baseball picks in the MLB June draft, possibly both in the first 5 picks of the first round.

Saturday LSU tosses out left-hander Kyle Bouman and on Sunday freshman lefty Jared Poche takes the hill.

Friday March 14 - @ Vanderbilt 6:30 pm
Saturday March 15 - @ Vanderbilt 2:15 pm (FSN)
Sunday March 16 - @ Vanderbilt 1 pm

Prediction - Who wins? Vandy coach Tim Corbin is one of the best in the SEC, if not the country. He’s got Vanderbilt in the top 10 again, however the Commodores only win one game this weekend as LSU takes 2-3.

UNO Baseball (4-9)

Coach Maestri’s Privateers lost 2 out of 3 in Troy, Alabama last weekend. Their Tuesday night game vs Southern Mississippi was canceled in the first inning due to a lot of rain in Hattiesburg. This weekend the Privateers take on conference leading Sam Houston State in Maestri Field at First NBC Park on the UNO campus. Side note - the baseball facility received its new name this week

Prediction - Who wins? Last week, I predicted UNO would take 2 of 3 from Troy and I was wrong. Sam Houston State leads the conference, but leaves New Orleans with two losses as UNO gets a couple in the win column this weekend.

Tulane Basketball (17-16)

The Green Wave ended their season Thursday afternoon with a 70-49 loss to Tulsa in the Conference USA tournament. The Wave won their first round game a 66-61 victory over North Texas Wednesday in order to play Tulsa on Thursday. Season is over now for the Green Wave as coach Ed Conroy moves to the off-season and recruiting some new players to come Uptown.

Tulane Baseball (9-6)

The Green Wave baseball team lost 2-3 in California last weekend and also lost 7-4 Wednesday night to Louisiana-Lafayette at Turchin Stadium. Wednesday’s loss was the 3rd in a row for Coach Jones’ Wave. This weekend Tulane goes to Greenville, North Carolina to battle the East Carolina Pirates

Friday March 14 @ East Carolina 5:30 pm
Saturday March 15 @ East Carolina 1 pm
Sunday March 16 @ East Carolina 12 pm

Prediction - Who wins? Tulane bats .333 in the win-loss record this weekend in the Tarheel State as they take 1 game from the Pirates.
