Gambit Sports Weekend: Football, baseball and a women's football tryout

Posted By on Fri, Mar 28, 2014 at 1:29 PM

Football and baseball are on tap locally this weekend.

New Orleans Saints

It was kind of quiet on the Black and Gold front this week in regards to the transaction wire. The Saints announced the re-signing of QB Luke McCown to a 1-year contract. The Saints also announced that they are splitting their training camp between their Metairie facility and The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.

The Greenbrier hails itself as "America’s Resort" and from looking at its website, it appears to be. One can golf, gamble and dine at six restaurants. Let’s hope nobody on the Saints roster ends up in trouble at the casino. I’ll say that I really do like this split training camp. This allows the team to get away from the comforts of home, enjoy some cooler weather and more importantly work together as a team on the bond a team needs for entire season.

Below the jump: Pelicans, LSU, Tulane and UNO baseball, and the New Orleans Oracles women's football team ...

New Orleans Pelicans (31-40)

The Pelicans are on a 4-game winning streak and have won five out of their last 6 games. Their last win was a 98-86 thriller Wednesday night at home in the Smoothie King Center. The Pels were severely shorthanded with only nine players available. Even without Jrue Holiday, Eric Gordon, Ryan Anderson, Jason Smith, Austin Rivers & Brian Roberts, the Pels managed to keep point guard Chris Paul without a field goal (0-12). The Pels over the past week have defeated the Miami Heat, Brooklyn Nets and the Los Angeles Clippers. Also, all of last year, Monty Williams’ squad had only 27 wins. With about 10 games remaining in the season, the Pels already surpassed that amount with 31 this season. Things are on the rise for NOLA basketball.

Friday March 28 vs Utah Jazz 7 pm • Smoothie King Center (FSNO)
Saturday March 29 @ San Antonio 7 pm • AT&T Center (FSNO)

Prediction - Who wins? Pelicans split two games this weekend. They’ll defeat the Jazz tonight, but lose on the road at San Antonio. Of course, I predicted this same result last weekend, with the Pels going one for 2 and losing to Miami, and that was wrong. Hopefully, I’m wrong again.

LSU Baseball (20-5-1)

The 8th ranked Tigers lost Tuesday night in New Orleans at Tulane 3-2 in 11 innings. It was a disappointing loss for the Tigers as the Wave was without its head coach Rick Jones who was sent home due to an illness and the Wave had lost five of their last seven going into Tuesday night’s game. LSU’s bats need to get warmed up because they’ve only scored six runs in the past 33 innings. That type of output won’t win little league games either, so hopefully the Tigers can get things together as they prepare for the Gators this weekend.

Friday March 28 @ Florida 6:30 pm (CST)
Saturday March 29 @ Florida 12 pm
Sunday March 30 @ Florida 12 pm

Prediction - Who wins? I’ll go with my alma mater this weekend and say the Tigers sweep the Gators. The Gators are 16-9 and 3-3 in SEC play, however I feel LSU bounces back this weekend and takes all three games in Gainesville.

UNO Baseball (8-14)

The Privateers are on a 2-game winning streak after defeating Alcorn State Tuesday and Wednesday at Maestri Field. This weekend UNO will host Texas A&M – Corpus Christi here in New Orleans.

Friday March 28- vs Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 6:30 pm
Saturday March 29 - @ Houston Baptist University 2 pm
Sunday March 30 @ Houston Baptist University 1pm

Prediction - Who wins? UNO stays at home to take on the Islanders and they go home happy also by winning two out of three.

Tulane Baseball (13-11)

As I mentioned earlier under the LSU section, the Wave won Tuesday’s game vs LSU 3-2 in 11 innings. Coach Rick Jones will not be in the dugout this weekend as pitching and associate head coach, Chad Sutter will lead the Green Wave vs. the Thundering Herd of Marshall in Charleston, West Virginia.

Friday March 28 @ West Virginia 5 pm
Saturday March 29 @ West Virginia 11 am
Sunday March 30 @ West Virginia 9 am

Prediction - Who wins? Tulane goes to West Virginia and wins two out of three from Marshall in the Mountaineer State.

New Orleans Oracles

The New Orleans Oracles is New Orleans’ women’s full contact football team. They are part of the Sugar N Spice Football league with teams from the Texas cities of Austin, Corpus Christi, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, San Antonio, Killeen and Laredo, as well as Oklahoma City. The Oracles are having tryouts Sunday March 30. If you’re a woman and are interested in playing football in New Orleans, here's how you can try out.
