Chris Bower's documentary about Mardi Gras Indian culture, We Won't Bow Down, will premiere Saturday night at the Solomon Victory Theatre in the National World War II Museum. The screening will be presented by actor Wendell Pierce, who said this in a statement about the film:

Shot entirely in New Orleans, Louisiana over an eight year period, the film explores a secret society of African Americans within inner city New Orleans as they voluntarily donate their time, energy and devotion to create hand-beaded Native American costumes. The costumes embody a cultural consciousness and spiritual awakening of the enslaved Africans brought to the New World through the slave trade and its generational lingering effects. The Mardi Gras Indian Culture is one that has to be celebrated and revered with a sense of perseverance, honor, family and legacy. And that is why I am proud to present We Won’t Bow Down.

Part of the proceeds of the premiere will go to The Pontchartrain Park Neighborhood Association.

A "red carpet screening" begins at 7:15 p.m., followed by a general screening at 9:15 p.m. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased here.
