Culinary side hustles of this year's Jazz Fest artists

While music may be their first love, many of this year’s Jazzfest artists have food-related side projects that range from signature ice cream and chocolates, to Mexican food restaurant chains and controversy. Here are a few of the culinary side hustles of this year’s performers:

Chaka Khan: After losing a whopping 75 pounds, Chaka Khan launched her signature line of chocolates in 2013 — Chakalates — which feature “antioxidant-rich dark chocolate, with velvety bass notes.”

Flavor Flav: Everyone’s favorite timekeeping member of Public Enemy has tried his hand several times at launching restaurants including Flavor Flav’s Chicken and Ribs in Detroit, Flav's Fried Chicken in Iowa and House of Flavor in Las Vegas. All closed within six months of opening.

Boz Scaggs: The 70s blue-eyed soul icon is the owner and operator of Scaggs Vineyard in Napa, California, which produces, “elegant, multi-layered French-style red and rosé wines.”


Phish:
Not every band gets their own signature munchie, but jam band Phish has the ice cream market cornered with a Ben and Jerry’s flavor, Phish Food. The sweet treat was created to celebrate the shared Vermont roots between to two, and features a chocolate ice cream based with marshmallow, caramel, and fudge fish.

Christina Aguilera:
The former teen pop queen might be best known for her ridiculous, junk food filled concert rider, but she also serves as an official ambassador for the World Food Program.

The String Cheese Incident:
While they have never dabbled in actual cheese production, the band’s name stems from a fight between bandmates about cheese while on tour in their early days in Colorado.

Santana: Named after the hit song from his 1999 album, Supernatural, Carlos Santana operates a small chain of Mexican restaurants called Maria, Maria located across Northern California, Arizona, and Texas.

Lyle Lovett: In 2012, Lyle Lovett took a serious stand about his Mexican food, claiming that he refused to eat it east of the Mississippi River—even if it was prepared by great Chicago chef Rick Bayless. The two eventually kissed and made up.

Eric Clapton: Clapton served as an investment partner in last year’s reopening of longtime Upper East Side stalwart Le Bilboquet, along with billionaire Ronald Perelman and real estate mogul Steve Witkoff.
