Mark and Karen Logan are excited about what’s brewing in Mid-City.
The couple is currently living in Alaska and finalizing plans to return home to New Orleans to open Second Line Brewing, a production brewery and tap room, in a Mid-City warehouse space that until recently housed film industry equipment. By the end of the year, it may be a destination for those seeking locally brewed beer.
“We saw the opportunity to come back here and take a chance,” Mark says. “People want to try something new.”
Karen grew up in Metairie, attended Mount Carmel Academy and LSU and met Mark in Houston, Texas, where she worked for Shell Oil Company. Mark had a degree in chemistry and worked in biotech business development and pharmaceuticals before switching to a medical career and position as a physician’s assistant at a Houston hospital emergency room.
The couple lived in Lakeview from 2007 until Karen transferred to work for Shell in Alaska in 2011. They were drawn to the brewing culture of the Pacific Northwest and started to think about opening a brewery in New Orleans.
Mark puts his scientific knowledge to work on the brewing side and Karen handles the business of planning the brewery. They expect to return to New Orleans Aug. 1 with newly hired head brewer, Jason Weissberg, who currently runs the Dogfish Head brewpub in Delaware. The Logans plan to give employees the opportunity to have ownership of the brewery and hope their business inspires more people to begin brewing beer at home.
“This will be where people can come to cut their teeth in the brewing industry and learn about craft beer,” Mark says. “We’re very much about the education process and the community.”
