When the scaffolding was removed recently from the facade of Checkered Parrot at 3629 Prytania, curious diners may have wondered if this signaled the restaurant was one step closer to opening after a stop-work order was issued by the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors in late February.
Don't get your hopes up, according to restaurant franchise manager Brent Gilbertson. The restaurant will be back under construction beginning next week, but with no projected opening date in sight.
Construction on Checkered Parrot's Uptown digs began in July 2012, with the restaurant's first French Quarter location shuttering late last year. (The original Checkered Parrot in Gwinnett, Georgia also is closed.) The two-story bar and restaurant concept has a longstanding online presence indicating an April 2014 opening date. The website also features a burger, nacho, and fried foods-heavy menu, as well as a disconnected phone number and a perky, Margaritaville-style parrot mascot.
Speaking from the restaurant's sister franchise Jalapeno Charlie's in Atlanta, Gilbertson declined to comment further about the restaurant's future, indicating that he was not at liberty to discuss details of Checkered Parrot "because it is a franchise."
