Any woman who's ever wanted to bust a move in a New Orleans parade (and look good doing it) will get their chance to test their mettle this weekend. The New Orleans Organ Grinders dance team will be holding tryouts this Saturday June 28th from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday June 29th from 1 to 4 p.m. at the ReNEW Cultural Arts Academy at 3128 Constance St.
The Organ Grinders (named after an obscure Prince song) have been dancing in their signature monkey costumes since 2010 and have quickly become one of the most ubiquitous dance troupes in the city and you may have seen them this past weekend at the Festigals Stiletto Strut. You can also catch the "Sexah Monkeys" performing in multiple Mardi Gras parades a year and also march in Krewe du Boo, the Cystic Fibrosis Walk, Jazz in the Park and other events.
Auditions are open to anyone 21 years of age or older and "all skill levels, sizes, colors" are welcome according to the group's website. All applicants mustpre-register by filling out this application. Both audition days are mandatory and will consist of one day of learning choreography and another of performing in front of and getting to know active members. Organ Grinders members must be able to commit to weekly practices (check out the video of one here) and pay yearly dues. For more information check out the Organ Grinders website or Facebook page.
