The New Orleans episode of Esquire Network’s Brew Dogs
airs Aug. 20 and will feature New Orleans as the destination that Scottish “extreme” travelling brewers James Watt and Martin DIckie visit to take in the local culture.
Prior to filming, the producers reached out to several breweries to get a feel for the scene. Leith Adams, co-founder of Mudbug Brewing in Thibodaux, says he received a call, but since his brewery is not up and running yet, he was unable to participate.
Bayou Teche’s Karlos Knott says, “The producers wanted a list of our favorite beers and a sampling list of the best beers brewed by all the other Louisiana breweries.” Knott also had the opportunity to film a food pairing segment with Watt and Dickie at Ste. Marie (now Meauxbar).
“The idea for the segment was for me to pick three of our beers, while James and Martin picked three to compete with little ol’ Bayou Teche,” Knott says. “I was nervous, I did not want to lose, and let me tell you James and Martin took it very serious – what you won’t see on the show is all of the smack talking coming from those two between courses. It was brutal!”
The concept for every Brew Dogs episode is conceptualizing and creating a beer that represents the city visited in the most off-the-wall way possible. Producers reached out to NOLA Brewing’s Derek Lintern to plot New Orleans’ beer, which wlll have to be kept under wraps until the show airs. However, the night that Brew Dogs filmed the unveiling of the beer, Lintern told the crowd assembled to taste the collaboration that when the crew showed up on the bayou in Larose to brew, “I saw two airboats. The one with the brewing setup didn’t scare me.” He paused. “It was the one with the water filtration system.”
NOLA Brewing will be hosting a viewing party with schwag, beer and barbecue at 8 p.m. August 20.
