Fat Boy Pantry,
the new ice cream and sandwich shop from Barq’s Root Beer heiress Hillary Barq, is now open.
The shop, which Barq says will function as a "gourmet market" serving coffee, juice, sandwiches and ice cream, opened last Thursday (Aug. 4) at 1302 Magazine Street.
Barq, who owned the since-shuttered St. Charles Avenue Sicilian eatery Cibugnu,
says she’s taken to the craft of ice cream making in the past year and makes all of the 16 flavors in-house.
“'I think a lot about flavors that might mix together well on a certain day and just go with it,” Barq says. “So the flavors will be constantly rotating: I make mousse, ice, sherbet, ice cream, gelato – and there are no extracts or artificial flavors.”
Toppings run the gamut from classic (hot fudge, caramel, sprinkles) to the more adventurous (olive oil and Zapp’s chips). Besides the standard scoops, sundaes, floats and shakes there are also corresponding party-size versions (for $66 the Fat Boy Pantry will get you 30 scoops with toppings).
In addition to a full espresso program, the shop also sells a selection of fresh-squeezed juices (the Fat B Gone features lemon, habanero peppers, ginger, grapefruit and orange) and breakfast sandwiches, pitas and po-boys which will be served all day starting next week.
Sandwiches include a fried lobster po-boy dressed with remoulade and drawn butter, a Greek-leaning pita sandwich made with lamb belly and feta tzatziki, and a Philly cheese steak iteration made with rib-eye and American cheese, among others.
Barq had originally planned to sell packaged liquor at the store, a request that was rejected
by the City Planning Commission earlier this year.
Fat Boy Pantry will be open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 11 p.m. on the weekends.
