The Contemporary Arts Center
(CAC) announced it will begin renovations and add as a tenant The Domain Companies
, the New York and New Orleans-based developer behind South Market District
, Ace Hotel
and other local projects. The project will begin Oct. 1, according to a press release.
The third and fourth floors of the CAC will become The Shop
, an office hub for "technology, arts and cultural-based businesses." The Idea Village
will be a tenant of The Shop, which is expected to open in early 2017. The Shop will include 40,000 square feet of space and accommodate 350-400 people, according to the press release. There will be common areas, meeting and office space and a rooftop deck.
"Over the years, the CAC has leased space to unique and complementary partner tenants — including the New Orleans Film Society, the National Performance Network, and Junebug Productions. The mission of The Shop is to bring members of the creative class in to our building as their tenants," said CAC Executive Director Neil Barclay in a released statement.
Other renovation plans include expanding first floor gallery space and improving performance spaces. The CAC will present project details Thursday, Oct. 6.
The third floor space was renovated for use during Prospect New Orleans' Prospect.1 international art biennial, which opened in 2008. Most recently the third floor was used for an Adam Pendleton exhibit occupying three floors of the CAC.
The Shop is referred to as a "co-working" space.
"Co-working spaces strengthen the economy and promote job and business growth. We're thrilled to introduce co-working space for creative professionals to Downtown New Orleans, and there is no better place to do it than the CAC," said Domain Companies Principal Matthew Schwartz in a released statement.
Schwartz co-founded The Domain Companies with Chris Papamichael in 2004. Both are graduates of Tulane University.
South Market District is a $450 million development featuring apartments, restaurants and retail spaces on O'Keefe Avenue.
Other local Domain Company projects include mixed-income rental property developments such as The Preserve on Tulane Avenue and Meridian New Orleans on Jefferson Davis Parkway.
