Y@ Speak: The Beyonce Blackout Bowl edition

Posted by on Mon, Feb 4, 2013 at 11:53 AM

New Orleans: You're like a quirky, twentysomething daughter who insists on hosting Thanksgiving dinner at her tiny shotgun house in a "weird" part of town. Things are going well at first — no one's arguing about politics and grandma actually seems to enjoy the silken tofu and kale dip — but then you end up burning the turkey.

The great Super Bowl blackout happened after unprecedented amounts of bootyliciousness during the halftime show. But you know what? It's fine. The week leading up to the big event was a fun, decadent time for celebrities, media and regular folks alike; I doubt visitors enjoy themselves this much during Super Bowls in other places. You may have burnt the turkey, but Aunt Cheryl totally wants to come back next year.

Pro tip: Don't wire $5,900 to someone on the Internet who promises you Super Bowl tickets

From KCBS-TV in San Francisco:

HAYWARD (CBS SF) — An East Bay couple is out nearly $6,000 after falling victim to a scammer offering fake tickets to the Super Bowl.

The Osgood family found four seats for sale on Craigslist through an individual claiming to be a Baltimore Ravens season ticketholder. The cost seemed fair — $5,900, about double the original price.

After talking the deal out through text and email messages, the couple wired the funds cross country. When the package arrived from the seller, all it contained was a printed note that said "Enjoy the game!!!! Go Ravens!!! LOL.”

The San Jose Mercury News had more:

Osgood, a season-ticket holder at Candlestick Park for four years, and her boyfriend have bought seats in the new Santa Clara stadium and were planning to go to the Super Bowl in New Orleans with two other family members in their RV. They still plan on going — even if it means watching the game at a bar on Bourbon Street.

(Possible San Francisco Chronicle headline, Mon. Feb. 4: "LOCAL COUPLE LOSES $500 IN BIG EASY STREET BET OVER ORIGIN OF SHOES.")

Louisiana scores a C+ for government website transparency

Posted by on Tue, Jan 29, 2013 at 1:41 PM

Government transparency watchdog organization Sunshine Review has released its first ever assessment of "proactive disclosure" on state, county, city and school district websites. Based on the group's 10-point transparency checklist — including current and archived budget information, contracts, lobbying activity and contact info for elected representatives — the state of Louisiana scores an overall C-plus, 33 out of 50 states for website transparency, just behind Montana. The top-ranked state was California. Nebraska scored the lowest.

Important to keep in mind: This study only scores government websites, which might not represent be Louisiana's most significant transparency problem. Also see this. And this. And this. There are more.

Of the three subcategories, Louisiana's state website scored the best, with a B-minus. Websites for the state's five largest parishes scored a C-plus, as did the five largest cities. The five largest school districts' websites scored lowest, with a D-plus.

Note: Sunshine Review's report does not say whether it counted Orleans Parish as a single district, as the state does in op-eds, or whether it only examined the Recovery School District, the larger of the two. If the former, it does not say if the website in question is the RSD website, which is hopefully a work in progress, the serviceable Orleans Parish School Board website or the ever-changing state Department of Education website.

Carnival got going this weekend with some bigger krewes rolling Uptown. But the real show was Downtown, where creativity abounded in the form of costumed canines, Sci-Fi enthusiasts and miniature floats by the grown-up versions of the people who always made the best dioramas in the fifth grade. Also this week: the city prepares for Super Bowl, Chris Paul isn't so into the New Orleans Pelicans and Trina Edwards contemplates eating.

NOLA.com asks: when is Super Bowl 2013?

Posted by on Tue, Jan 22, 2013 at 3:06 PM

As New Orleans prepares to host the event know as the "Super Bowl," there are many questions on locals' minds. Which major roads will be closed? Will there be anywhere to park my car? What events sponsored by dog food companies and cable providers can I attend? But the most important question weighing heavily on our minds is: when is the Super Bowl?

Fortunately, NOLA.com has answered this tough question in its dogged pursuit of robust content-gathering.

Y@ Speak gets dirty

This week's tweets were filled with talk of a dirty politician, the Dirty Birds and the grand dame of dirt, the annual procession of animatronic intercourse known as Krewe du Vieux — which came early but we were totally OK with that. Also this week: New Orleans suffers residual effects of Bieber Fever.

Y@ Speak goes to the movies!

Posted by on Mon, Jan 14, 2013 at 12:03 PM

It was a very Hollywood South kind of week with Academy Awards nomination announcements — featuring nods for locally shot films Beasts of the Southern Wild and Django Unchained — locals livetweeting the Golden Globes, a thick, horror movie-esque fog that blanketed the city and a shout-out from famous tween Justin Bieber. Try not to let it get to your head, New Orleans. Also this week: a notable king cake and your typical blend of tweets about weird local crime, fires and sports stuff I don't quite understand.

Y@ Speak: It's Carnival time

Posted by on Mon, Jan 7, 2013 at 10:24 AM

Last night was the Epiphany, meaning Carnival is officially here — and as you start your morning over your daily breakfast of cafe au lait and beignets, it might be tempting to contemplate your fleeting New Year's resolutions as they give way to the endless parade of office kitchen king cakes, daydrinking and other Carnival vices. But instead distract yourself with tweets about New Year's, the 60 Minutes special on the Times-Picayune, Downton Abbey and more. You always have Lent to repent.

Y@ Speak: Bye, 2012

Posted by on Mon, Dec 31, 2012 at 11:57 AM

It's the last Y@ Speak of 2012, you guys! It's been a great year of tweakouts and Twitter fights, angry Saints tweets and NFL players saying hilarious things, celebrity sightings and overreacting to everything. While you all compose your mental list of ill-fated New Year's resolutions, might I suggest including some Twitter-related goals? Maybe try to get rid of: manual retweets (they are annoying and difficult for others to favorite or retweet those tweets for themselves, among other things), excessive use of hashtags ("Just saw a brass band on the street!! #OnlyinNola #nolalove #Blessed"), vomit-y game day tweets (except you, Chris Boudy. Keep doing you), and dumb corporate drivel in your bio like "retweets are not endorsements!" and "my thoughts are my own!" (as opposed to whose?) I would say to not fight or freak out on Twitter, but then it would be less enjoyable for me.

Anyway, happy New Year, and may you avoid falling bullets, falling drunk girls in sequined dresses and overpriced prix fixe menus!

Y@ Speak: It's the end of the world as we know it

Posted by on Mon, Dec 24, 2012 at 11:50 AM

... and I feel fine. Because the world was never actually going to end, guys. Other things that happened this week, besides the "Mayan apocalypse" not being a real thing: locals got ready for Christmas, the NRA was insane, the Saints beat the Cowboys and Orleans Parish School Board president Thomas Robichaux spoiled Gossip Girl.

Go ahead and open your presents (it's a bunch of tweets; I'm really broke this year) on Christmas Eve — you've been good boys and girls this year.
