  • Satchmo Summerfest 2016

As always, this year’s Satchmo SummerFest gave visitors and residents reason to celebrate. In addition to honoring the father of jazz Louis Armstrong with three days of free live music shows in the French Quarter, we got a taste of that second line flavor we’ve been feening for since June when parade season closes for the summer. While there are those diehards who would parade in the dead heat of New Orleans summer, most of us agree that sweating like a $2 hoe is not a cute look not to mention the real imminent threats to our health. And so we’ve come to depend on Satchmo second line to get us second line addicts over that two month hump.

As always, the Treme Brass Band, Grand Marshall Bo Monkey Red and the Baby Dolls set it off followed by the Zulus, Sudan and TBC Brass Band along with other clubs and bands. Check out Sunday’s scenery, allow it to soothe your soul while we wait for September.

Alton Sterling Peace Vigil March and Second Line

Sunday, July 10, 2016 5-7pm

Today’s peace march and second line is being spearheaded by Charles ‘Action Jackson’, radio DJ for WWOZ radio and ‘second line ambassador’, to show support for the family of Alton Sterling, who was killed by Baton Rouge police officers. “I’m tired.”, says a weary sounding Jackson. “I am a young Black man, born and raised in 9th ward. Fo so much killing going on, nobody more on radio that has a voice than me. I have to use that voice to keep people calm, to work with the police.”

Jackson, who worked over 36 years in law enforcement, says he can relate to the stresses police officers are under. “They have to make split decisions.” But says the goal of today’s event is “to stop the killing, stop the violence. We come in peace. We want to help everyone stay calm.”

In the new New Orleans, it seems people can't get enough parades or burlesque, and the two public displays are merging in a National Underwear Day parade, announced by organizers Ryan Ballard of the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus and Xena Zeit-Geist, founder of the Society of Sin burlesque troupe.

The parade is Friday, Aug. 5. There's a pre-party and gathering in Washington Square in Marigny at 6 p.m. The procession departs at 7 p.m. and travels to Castillo Blanco, the Chewbacchus den, where the group will hold its "Free Ball." Organizers have named royalty for the day. Chris Leonard, Executive Director of New Orleans Pride, is the King. Burlesque performer Trixie Minx is Queen. Admission to both events is free.
