Last-minute debates before Saturday's election: Mayor and City Council District A

Posted By on Thu, Jan 30, 2014 at 2:11 PM

For those voters who may be undecided (or just didn't get enough of this Sneauxmageddon-interrupted election season): WWL-TV will be broadcasting a mayoral debate tonight between incumbent Mitch Landrieu and challengers Michael Bagneris and Danatus King. The station's Karen Swensen will moderate, and the panelists will be WWL-TV's Sally-Ann Roberts and Mike Hoss, as well as Stephanie Grace, columnist for The New Orleans Advocate.

The debate begins at 6 p.m. and will be repeated tomorrow night on WYES-TV at 10:30 p.m., as well as uploaded to WWLTV.com.

And the winter weather caused the cancellation of a couple of City Council forums, at least one of which has been rescheduled for the very last possible minute: Friday night. District A candidates will face off at 6 p.m. at St. Mary's Dominican High School (7701 Walmsley Ave. at Lowerline St.). The event is hosted by the Carrollton Area Network.

For more information on this year's races, read our profiles of the candidates and issues in the mayoral contest, the sheriff's race and the six City Council contests. Polls close Saturday night at 8 p.m. Gambit political editor Clancy DuBos will be on set at WWL-TV as the results come in, and Gambit reporters will be on Twitter reporting from various campaign parties and events around the city.

Gambit TV: 3-Day Weekend A&E picks — and Derek Kevra's weekend forecast (with special guest Pippa the Piano-Playing Chicken)

Posted By on Thu, Nov 21, 2013 at 11:32 AM

Weekend weather and weekend entertainment picks! First, the Gambit-cast with our friend Derek Kevra. Note that the numbers on the 7-Day go from 78 degrees to 37 degrees:

"Like Odell Beckham Jr. this weekend's weather is all over the place! On Friday we'll have highs near 80 with mostly cloudy skies and a decent chance for scattered showers. That chance goes up on Saturday, as a cold front passes through, making for a wet Saturday. Temperatures will then plummet behind the front, as the wind picks up. Sunday will be partly cloudy, dry, but very cold thanks to a strong north wind. And speaking of Odell, plan on showers in Baton Rouge."

Under the jump: Noah Bonaparte Pais and Eric Paulsen with some stuff to do this weekend, including the Xavier University Scholarship Benefit Concert with Bill Cosby, the Commodores and En Vogue; Lost Bayou Ramblers at Siberia; Blue is the Warmest Color; the New Orleans Fringe Festival; and more ... plus a bonus video of Pippa the piano-playing chicken.

Gambit TV: 3-Day Weekend A&E picks — and Derek Kevra's weekend forecast

Posted By on Thu, Nov 7, 2013 at 12:03 PM

Here comes the weekend, and WWL-TV's Derek Kevra has your Gambit-cast, while Noah Bonaparte Pais takes care of the entertainment picks. First, Derek, who is excited about some gators:

"Folks that are planning to head out to the Holy Name of Jesus Gator Fest this weekend are in store for some nice weather! Friday evening will be cool and breezy, with temps falling into the 50s. Make sure to grab a jacket. Saturday and Sunday look very pleasant with afternoon highs in the 70s and a small chance for showers on Sunday. Get out and enjoy yourself some Gator Fest!"

If you're not quite so much into gators as Derek is, let Noah steer you toward other pursuits, including Hair at Le Petit Theatre, Laura Marling at the Civic Theater, Lebowski Fest at the Howlin' Wolf and lots more:

Gambit TV: 3-Day Weekend A&E picks — and Derek Kevra's spooooky Halloween forecast

Posted By on Thu, Oct 31, 2013 at 11:55 AM

It's Halloween, and we have Rob Ryan, Flo from Progressive Insurance, Strawberry Shortcake, a 610 Stomper, various witches, Shaun of the Dead and Lisa Turtle from Saved by the Bell wandering around our office. But rain is in the forecast, so we got the twerk-or-treat 411 from WWL-TV meteorologist Derek Kevra:

"In general, the weekend looks like a wonderful fall showcase, but there are a few details to point out. Some showers are still possible early Friday afternoon, but the rest of the weekend will be dry. Voodoo goers should plan on a soggy ground for Friday and outside of the hours 11AM-4PM, some cooler temps, especially at night. If you're planning on being there overnight, bring a jacket. Don't say I didn't warn ya!."

This weekend's big news, of course, is the Voodoo Music Experience (check our complete preview, schedule and maps here), but there's also Chelsea Light Moving at One Eyed Jacks, 12 Years a Slave (our review; Ken Korman says it may be the best movie of 2013), The Mountaintop at Anthony Bean Community Theater (our preview); and lots more. Noah Bonaparte Pais explains it all to Eric Paulsen:
