JACK DEMPSEY’S
738 Poland Ave. 943-9914
It might be hard to believe, but Jack Dempsey’s actually serves more seafood broiled than fried. Snow crabs, king crabs, shrimp and crawfish make for fine broiled dishes, while the broiled redfish is embellished with a crabmeat au gratin topping. The J.D. seafood platter for two could nourish a small nation, with mounds of fried shrimp, oysters, catfish and redfish, two cups of gumbo, two stuffed crabs, two crawfish pies, plus a side of French fries or baked macaroni. Lunch Tuesday through Friday, dinner Wednesday through Saturday. No reservations. Credit cards. $$

JACQUES-IMO’S
8324 Oak St. 861-0886
With Austin Leslie in charge of frying and Chef-owner Jack Leonardi entertaining the crowds between orders, you’re in for more than just an innovative meal at Jacques-Imo’s. Once you’re finally seated in the bayou-esque dining room, be sure to try the cheesecake appetizer made with smoked Gouda, shrimp and alligator sausage. Next, try the blackened redfish served with hollandaise and crabmeat. Reservations recommended only for parties of five or more. Dinner Monday through Saturday. Credit cards. $$

JAEGER’S ON THE LAKE
1928 West End Park 283-7585
Jaeger’s is a great place to get great deals on seafood for the whole family while you sit out on the deck and enjoy a view of Lake Pontchartrain. Meanwhile, Danny Chauvin sings and performs every night of the week inside the restaurant. Take the Big "A" Serious Seafood platter with your tunes. It packs the usual players of fish, oysters, shrimp and crab and can feed six to eight people. Reservations accepted. Lunch Saturday and Sunday, dinner Wednesday through Sunday. Credit cards. $

JAMBALAYA AND COMPANY
3235 Williams Blvd., Kenner 465-2212
When you dine here, you’d be wise to choose the namesake dish; the meats are cooked with select onions and Cajun spices, then combined with rice and served with Creole-style red or white beans, a choice of potato salad or green salad and French bread. Other options include chicken and andouille gumbo, seafood gumbo, and Creole-style red beans and rice. No reservations. Lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday. Credit cards and checks. $

JAMILA’S
7808 Maple St. 866-4366
Mediterranean-Tunisian food is the order of operations in one of the most humbly romantic settings Uptown. Order one of the couscous varieties and you’ll be presented with lamb, chicken or vegetables floating in a tomato-based sauce with paprika and tumeric alongside a heaping bowl of couscous. Don’t miss the crawfish, zucchini, and spinach bisque to start. Belly dancing on Saturday nights. Reservations recommended. Lunch Tuesday through Friday, dinner Tuesday through Sunday. Credit cards. $$

JAZZ SEAFOOD & STEAKHOUSE
2722 Williams Blvd., Kenner 468-3237
Owners Frank and Elsa Billeaudeau invite you out to Kenner from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. every Tuesday for 25-cent oysters (that’s $5 a dozen). In fact, they’d like to see you any day for lunch specials priced between $3.95 and $7.95, as well as their 16-ounce porterhouse with potato and salad for $18.95. If you can, save room for homemade bread pudding and peach cobbler. No reservations. Lunch weekdays, dinner nightly. Credit cards. $$

JERUSALEM
4641 S. Carrollton Ave. 488-1450
It’s Palestinian food the way they make it in this eatery’s namesake city, adhering to the Muslim sensibilities of owner Dirar Monsa and his family. The menu is short, and the venue is modest (it’s also a Middle Eastern grocery), but it’s a satisfying bang for your buck. Standard fare such as hummus, tabouleh, grape leaves, gyros and baba ghanoush are always here. So are the shawarma plates of marinated sliced beef or chicken. No reservations. Lunch and dinner daily. Credit cards and checks. $

JIMMY BUFFETT’S MARGARITAVILLE CAFÉ
1104 Decatur St. 592-2565
www.margaritavillecafe.com
What’s the most popular menu item at Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Café? The Cheeseburger in Paradise, of course. But fried seafood runs a close second, with the "Off to See the Lizard" platter featuring a mound of fried frog legs, gator bites, crawfish tails and catfish strips. If you’re interested in wasting away the day, the cozy front bar offers ample ammunition. No reservations. Lunch and dinner daily. Credit cards. $

JOE’S CRAB SHACK
8000 Lakeshore Drive 283-1010
Another choice for Gulf grub on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, Joe’s offers crab, shrimp, oysters and a variety of fish prepared five different ways: boiled, fried, grilled, steamed and garlicky. Joe’s is famous for barbecued Dungeness, king, snow, and blue crab. No reservations. Lunch and dinner daily. Credit cards. $$

JOEY K’S
3001 Magazine St. 891-0997
Joey K’s is a breath of old neighborhood air along its gentrified stretch of Magazine Street. Here, you’ll still find corned beef and cabbage on Monday, lamb shank with mustard greens Tuesday, beef brisket with cabbage Wednesday, meatloaf with macaroni and green beans Thursday, stuffed eggplant with fettuccine Friday and a barbecue plate on (you guessed it) Saturday. Reservations recommended for large parties. Breakfast and lunch Saturday, lunch and dinner Monday through Friday. Credit Cards. $

JOHNNY’S PO-BOYS
511 St. Louis St. 524-8129
326 Huey P. Long Ave., Gretna 362-8690
The very definition of what most people have in mind when they conjure up the image of a classic New Orleans po-boy shop, Johnny’s French Quarter flagship store started more than 50 years ago. When their reputation for delicious po-boys spread, so did demand. The seafood and roast beef po-boys reign as the most popular, but there’s also the Judge Bossetta po-boy with ground beef, and hot and Italian sausages. There are dozens more choices, from seafood muffalettas to country-fried steak with gravy. No reservations. Hours vary by location. No credit cards at French Quarter location. $

JUAN’S FLYING BURRITO
2018 Magazine St. 569-0000
With an eye toward hearty appetites, this Uptown restaurant’s namesake super burrito is way too heavy to fly. It involves chicken, steak, shrimp, beans and rice, rolled up with sour cream and guacamole. Quesadillas come in meat or veggie varieties that are grilled and placed in a folded-over 14-inch flour, whole wheat or spinach tortilla. No reservations. Lunch and dinner daily. Credit cards. $
