TAJ MAHAL INDIAN CUISINE
923-C Metairie Road, Metairie 836-6859
Just like at Uptown’s Nirvana (same owners), Taj Mahal offers a bounty of a lunch buffet at $6.95. And just as the real Taj Mahal is famous for its aesthetic beauty, Metairie’s Taj Mahal is known for its tandoori shrimp and Navrattan korma. The latter is composed of a veggie medley, paneer cheese, almonds and raisins cooked with cream and fresh herbs. Reservations recommended. Lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday. Credit cards. $$

TAN DINH
2005 Belle Chasse Hwy., Gretna 361-8008
Quail with sticky rice cakes, combination fried rice and chicken roti are all great choices, but desserts at Tan Dinh take center stage almost by default. The jiggly shapes of gelatin, jackfruit, young coconut and sweet beans are irresistible in the all-glass dessert case, with sweetened coconut milk in little beakers to pour over most of them. No reservations. Lunch and dinner Wednesday through Monday. Cash only. $

TANDOORI CHICKEN
115 University Place 299-1926
You might recognize Tandoori Chicken as that Indian spot you miss from the food court in the Elmwood Shopping Center. Now Indian tapestries set the tone for curried lentils and specialties from the tandoori oven at the downtown implant. Try the tandoori-baked bultar chicken, soaked in a tomato based curry cream sauce. Lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday, dinner Sunday. Credit cards. $$

TAQUERIA CORONA
857 Fulton St. 524-9805
1827 Hickory Ave., Harahan 738-6722
3535 Severn Ave., Metairie 885-5088
5932 Magazine St. 897-3974
Down-home Mexican cooking over an open flame is Taqueria Corona’s trademark. A house margarita, warm chips, and the smell of lime and garlic rising from fresh guacamole is a perfect start. Then you’ll be ready for Carne Asada – a charbroiled steak marinated in cilantro, tequila and lime. If your eyes are bigger than your stomach, the Numero Tres platter feeds a small army. No reservations. Lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday, dinner Sunday. Credit cards. $

TAQUEROS TAQUERIA-CANTINA
2723 Roosevelt Blvd., Kenner 441-8888
Chef Guillermo Peters puts aside Americanized versions of Mexican food to take diners on a taste adventure to the central and southern parts of his native Mexico. Always in demand are his giant scallops served on a crown of fresh spinach with rice and topped with poblano cream sauce. A beefy alternative is the steak stuffed with chilpotle peppers. Reservations accepted. Lunch Wednesday through Saturday, dinner Wednesday through Sunday. Credit cards. $$

TAVERN ON THE RIDGE
115 Focis St., Metairie 831-6725
Red meat fans rejoice at the menu of this high-spirited Metairie tavern. The charbroiled burgers are plump and juicy. Greener items such as the grilled chicken Caesar salad are available. No reservations. Lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday. Credit cards. $

TEDDY’S GRILL
5325 Franklin Ave. 288-9370
Vincent and Jan Bologna have owned Teddy’s Grill since 1970, and they still take the time to slow-roast their beef overnight. Try their labor of love with homemade gravy, either as a dinner or on a po-boy. Their catfish, thinly sliced and fried, also comes both ways. Lemon pound cake, cheesecake and homemade bread pudding, round off Teddy’s dessert selections. No reservations. Lunch Monday through Saturday, dinner weekdays. Credit cards. $

TED’S FROSTOP
3100 Calhoun St. 861-3615
Ted’s is to the collegiate community of Tulane and Loyola what Arnold’s was to Milwaukee. Stop by for a root beer float and inexpensive Southern-style breakfasts of eggs, grits, biscuits and pancakes. Lunch and dinner offerings include cheeseburgers, chilidogs and red beans with rice. The $1.59 Blue Ribbon breakfast includes an egg, grits or hash browns and a biscuit. If only Fonzie could be here. No reservations. Breakfast and lunch daily, dinner Monday through Saturday. Cash only. $

TEQUILA AND PEPPERS
2320 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie 837-6696
While open only one month in the old Jalapeno’s location, Mexican-hungry folks in Metairie are beginning to take notice of Tequila and Peppers. Perhaps it’s the traditional offerings of frozen margaritas and fajitas that draws them in. Or perhaps it’s the Louisiana flair given to south-of-the-border cuisine, such as the Shrimp a la Mexicana, with shrimp and vegetables sauteed in spices. Hard not to notice is the live Latin music on Thursday and Saturday nights. Reservations accepted. Lunch and dinner daily. Major cards and checks. $

TEXAS BAR-B-QUE COMPANY
3320 Houma Blvd., Metairie 456-2832
9851 I-10 Service Road 245-4402

Always popular is the hickory-smoked chicken, as well as the three-meat platter, from which Texas-sized appetites can feast on three selections of ribs, chicken, beef, pork or smoked sausage. It comes with beans, slaw and bread. No reservations. Lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday. Credit cards. $

THAI GARDEN
1011 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie 834-4804

Thai Garden also boasts a wide range of seafood, including calamari, jumbo shrimp, squid, salmon red snapper and catfish. Delivery available. Reservations recommended. Lunch Monday through Saturday, dinner Sunday. Credit cards. $$

Credit cards. $$

TONY MANDINA’S
1915 Pratt St., Gretna 362-2010
Trips to Italy help the Mandina family stay on its culinary toes. Another Alfredo sauce comes with pasta on the breaded chicken Lindsey Grace entree. All Mandina recipes are compilations of the family’s opinions and are tested in the restaurant before becoming regular menu items. Reservations recommended. TOP OF THE DOME STEAKHOUSE
500 Poydras Plaza (Hyatt Regency New Orleans) 599-4826
Elevation is underrated in New Orleans. See how you fare on the 32nd floor, spinning the night away at New Orleans’ only revolving rooftop steakhouse. Enjoy the panoramic view, both of the 1960s counter-culture cocktail atmosphere and of the city below. The Cajun surf ’n’ turf is a lobster tail decadently stuffed with crabmeat dressing and set atop a blackened filet mignon. Traditional New Orleans Cajun BBQ Shrimp also takes its place at the top. TORTORICI’S ITALIAN RESTAURANT
441 Royal St. 522-4295
