VEGA TAPAS CAFÉ
2051 Metairie Road, Metairie 836-2007
Vega launched a new spring menu in April featuring loads of local seafood creations. But why not start with the apple and Brie salad? The main ingredients are tossed with caramelized leeks, spring greens and apple cider vinaigrette. And the coriander tuna is still going strong. It comes thinly sliced and served with avocado relish and cilantro chile vinaigrette. Round out your deserving meal with a Rioja from the extensive wine list. Reservations recommended. Dinner Monday through Saturday. Credit cards and checks. $$

VENEZIA
134 N. Carrollton Ave. 488-7991
This family-style restaurant offers heaping portions of reassuring Italian favorites like cannelloni and vitello parmigiana. Venice might even approve of signature innovations like the veal supreme topped with shrimp, crawfish tails and artichoke hearts in a light cream sauce. And then there’s the hallowed eggplant Vatican, a hollowed-out, batter-fried eggplant stuffed with seafood and topped with creamy Alfredo. Reservations recommended. Lunch weekdays, dinner nightly. Credit cards. $$

VERA CRUZ
7537 Maple St. 866-1736
www.veracruz.com
Its extensive margarita menu makes it a favorite of the Uptown college crowd, but students of tasty and affordable Mexican fare will find plenty to love at Vera Cruz. Start out with the nachos Marineros – topped with white cheese and black beans – and move on to a huge, fresh platter of veggie fajitas with all the trimmings. Or split one of the hefty combo platters with a friend, like the Tres Amigos. Come on Saturday night for live music. Reservations accepted. Lunch Thursday through Saturday, dinner Monday through Saturday. Credit cards. $

VERANDA RESTAURANT
444 St. Charles Ave. (Hotel Inter-Continental) 585-4383
www.new-orleans.interconti.com

Breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, brunch Sunday. Credit cards. $$

VERONA RESTAURANT
1821 Hickory Ave., Harahan 739-9875
Chef Gus has a tenure of 30 years at Verona, and a local following to match. They come for food prepared in wood-burning ovens and upon wood-fired stoves, and the sun-drenched qualities in Mediterranean cuisine. Enjoy the flavors of spinach and eggplant manicotti with dill and three cheeses, or soup made with six onions and topped with a pastry crust and Parmesan. Reservations accepted for parties of six or more. Lunch and dinner daily. Credit cards and checks. $$

VERTI MART
1201 Royal St. 525-4767
If you’ve ever wondered what Quarterites eat, ask Verti Mart’s delivery people. They could write a book. Their traditional po-boys and specialty sandwiches are more than enough to share, and vegetarian options like the gargantuan twice-baked stuffed potato rule. They also offer hot plate dinners and hearty breakfast options. Delivery available. No reservations. Breakfast, lunch and dinner 24 hours. Credit cards. $

VESPERS BAR & GRILL
1414 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie 836-2304

Finish it off with a cigar or a glass from Vespers’ studied wine list. No reservations. Dinner and late-night Monday through Saturday. Credit cards. $

VIC’S KANGAROO CAFÉ
636 Tchoupitoulas St. 524-4329
Vic’s is the only oasis for Australian grub in New Orleans. Regulars crave the house specialty shepherd’s pie – ground beef and veggies in a rich gravy, topped off with fluffy mashed potatoes. The meat and chicken choices are also popular, and daily specials, such as the crabcakes on Fridays, give the menu an added dimension. No reservations. Dinner and late-night daily, lunch Monday through Friday. Credit cards. $

VICTOR’S

VINCENT’S ITALIAN CUISINE
4411 Chastant St., Metairie 885-2984
7839 St. Charles Ave. 866-9313
Although the Uptown location is the newer of the two, it gets plenty of traffic from the heavy student clientele that looks to Vincent’s for the occasional splurge night out. They come to both locations for homemade cannelloni stuffed with ground veal, pureed spinach and Parmesan cheese; the corn and crab bisque is another favorite. Reservations recommended. Lunch Tuesday through Friday at both locations; dinner nightly Uptown; dinner Monday through Saturday in Metairie. Credit cards. $$
