THE EDGE BAR & GRILL
3400 Hessmer Ave., Metairie 780-2266
Barflies rejoice at the news that the Edge now never closes its kitchen, while also adding breakfast items to the existing bar-food standards. Except for the daily lunch specials, any meal is available at any hour. A hearty rack of ribs comes with a baked potato or French fries; the po-boys are overstuffed and, for most items, the price is right. No reservations. Open 24 hours. Credit cards. $

EL PATIO
3244 Georgia Ave., Kenner 443-1188
Strolling guitarists light up the nights Wednesday through Saturday at El Patio. The mariachi sounds might get you in the mood for El Patio’s carne asada plate: an 18-oz. ribeye with garlic butter, served with soup, salad, beans and rice and dessert for $18.95. Another newcomer, the Maxamillian, is a chimichanga-like roll of beef, chicken or shrimp served with Jack Daniel’s barbecue sauce. Reservations recommended for parties of 10 or more. Lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday. Credit cards. $$

ELEVEN 79
1179 Annunciation St. 299-1179
This Italian eatery is housed in an old merchant’s cottage, in a neighborhood until recently not well known for its culinary finds. Whether you take a table in the elevated dining room or one in the bar filled with locals and Rolexes, start with the grilled calamari, pecorino polenta and lemon butter. Then move on to the signature veal Eleven 79, paneed and served with roasted red peppers, asparagus, buffalo mozzarella and a lemon veal sauce. Reservations recommended. Dinner Monday through Saturday, late-night Friday and Saturday. Credit cards. $$

ELIZABETH’S
601 Gallier St. 944-9272
Owner Elizabeth Heidi Trull is a chef worthy to cook in the city’s most hoity-toity kitchens. Instead, she offers us the gift of her talent in a cozy Bywater space for bargain prices. She’s famous for her roast beef po-boys and daily specials like meatloaf or grillades and grits. Stop by for breakfast any Saturday, and you’ll be pleased to discover one of the only spots for Old World New Orleans calas. No reservations. Breakfast and lunch Tuesday through Friday, brunch Saturday. Checks. $

EMBERS STEAK HOUSE
700 Bourbon St. 595-3172
www.embers.com
If you’re ordering prime rib in the French Quarter, you might as well enjoy it with a prime view from what Embers claims is the largest balcony on Bourbon Street. The whopping 24-oz. cut of beef is oven-roasted to your taste and served with warm French bread, a baked potato and a house salad. A Louisiana fried seafood platter with French fries is available for those who prefer surf over turf. Reservations recommended. Dinner nightly. Credit cards. $$

EMERIL’S
800 Tchoupitoulas St. 528-9393
www.emerils.com
Emeril Lagasse calls the cuisine at his Warehouse District namesake restaurant "new New Orleans," as good a way as any to classify dishes like the pork chop with tamarind-glazed roasted sweet potatoes and the andouille braised veal with Brie-potato galette. The king of BAM! wouldn’t forgive you if you didn’t save room for the banana cream pie. Reservations recommended. Lunch weekdays, dinner Monday through Saturday. Credit cards. $$$

EMERIL’S DELMONICO RESTAURANT
1300 St. Charles Ave. 525-4937
Now, this one Emeril calls "classic New Orleans Creole for the contemporary palate," which also sounds about right when you consider the pecan crusted Plaquemine’s Parish Oysters with melting Brie, or the Gulf rock shrimp with crispy shallots and lemon butter. Emeril’s Delmonico offers a fun Sunday brunch and a lunch menu with entrees ranging from $12 to $15. Reservations recommended. Lunch weekdays, dinner nightly, brunch Sunday. Credit cards. $$$

ERNST CAFÉ
600 S. Peters St. 525-8544
This 90-year-old Warehouse District business is both an eatery and one of the CBD professionals’ favorite happy hour joints. Maybe it has something to do with Ernst Cafe’s recent expansions and renovations; perhaps the outdoor seating. Better yet, the cafe’s popularity could be attributed to edibles like the fried chicken wrapped in an herbed tortilla with honey mustard. No reservations. Lunch, dinner and late-night Monday through Saturday. Credit cards and checks. $

ESPLANADE RESTAURANT
3443 Esplanade Ave. (Park Esplanade Apartments) 821-8939
The Esplanade Restaurant is tucked inside the Park Esplanade Apartments, but you don’t have to live there to enjoy Italian specialties, paneed trout and grilled hamburgers. Dinner won’t cost you a month’s rent either, with a $7.95 buffet on Tuesday, seafood specials on Friday and all-you-can-eat catfish on Saturday. Reservations accepted. Lunch and dinner until 7 p.m. or 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Credit cards and checks. $$

ESPRESSO YOURSELF COFFEEHOUSE
3604 Delaronde St. 271-0380
www.espressoyourself.net
A cafe with all the customary treats, Espresso’s menu also features a long list of light bites. The smoked turkey and shrimp salad sandwiches are popular with the regulars, as are the Caesar and spinach salads, both available with grilled chicken. For the summer, Italian sodas and frozen cappuccinos are a refreshing addition to your meal. No reservations. Breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday, coffee and pastries only on Sunday until 3 p.m. Credit cards. $

ETOILE
407 N. Columbia St., Covington 892-4578
To please the fine-tuned palates on the Northshore, this Covington restaurant goes gourmet in both food and wine. The award-winning wine list includes 37 selections by the glass to add to the extended list of vintages by the bottle. The grilled tilapia is topped with a caper, artichoke heart and tomato relish. Another tasty adventure is the New Orleans rum glazed pork chop, served with black-eyed pea slaw and garlic mashed potatoes. No reservations. Lunch Monday, lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday. Credit cards. $$$
