FALL RESTAURANT GUIDE BY NEIGHBORHOOD
10.30.01

ACME OYSTER HOUSE
7306 Lakeshore Drive 282-9200
See "Citywide" listing for restaurant description.

BRUNING’S
1922 West End Pkwy. 282-9395
Family recipes, longstanding traditions and dedicated cooks make this Bucktown seafooder a serious dining destination. It’s allegedly the oldest seafood restaurant in the country in continuous operation, made famous by various preparations of flounder, trout, redfish and catfish. (When trout is out of season locally, don’t ask for it; they make no substitute.) Fried corn nuggets are uniquely creamy. No reservations. Lunch and dinner daily. Credit cards. $$

CHATEAU COFFEE CAFE
139 Robert E. Lee Blvd. 286-1777
Both locations now stay open an hour later than they used to, serving their fresh coffees, pastries and salads until 10 p.m. Go beyond the traditional cafe menu with the smoked turkey salad: turkey rolled in baby Swiss with chopped walnuts and sliced apples over a bed of romaine lettuce (and don’t forget the raspberry walnut vinaigrette dressing). It’s still warm enough to sample the white chocolate almond shiver, a frozen vanilla ice cream treat with secret ingredients. No reservations. Breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. Credit cards and checks. $

FLIGHT DECK RESTAURANT
6001 Stars and Stripes Blvd. (New Orleans Lakefront Airport) 241-2561
There are no chain restaurants for this airport, but there sure is a view for this restaurant. Despite the obvious comings and goings, Flight Deck has its share of non-flight regulars who just plain like the food. Bell peppers come stuffed with shrimp, crabmeat and crawfish; the same sea critters are tossed with fettuccine and cream sauce. Reservations accepted. Breakfast and lunch daily. Credit cards. $

HONG KONG RESTAURANT
7400 Lakeshore Drive 282-1511
If you hope to impress a steak lover, the prime filet at Hong Kong might do the trick. Char-grilled, the filet is served with a wine, butter and basil sauce. If it’s seafood you’re craving, try the Crystal Shrimp. The crustaceans are marinated in wine and garlic and stir-fried with Chinese vegetables. Hong Kong offers fresh fish daily and a recently updated menu. Reservations recommended for parties of six or more. Dinner daily. Credit cards. $$

JAEGER’S ON THE LAKE
1928 West End Park 283-7585
Enjoy great deals on seafood for the whole family on the deck with Jaeger’s perfect view of Lake Pontchartrain. Meanwhile, Danny Chauvin sings and performs every night inside the restaurant. Take the Big "A" seafood platter with your tunes, which packs the usual players of fish, oysters, shrimp and crab and can feed six to eight people. Reservations accepted. Lunch Saturday and Sunday, dinner Wednesday through Sunday. Credit cards. $

JOE’S CRAB SHACK
8000 Lakeshore Drive 283-1010
www.landrysseafood.com
Another choice for Gulf grub on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, Joe’s offers crab, shrimp, oysters and a variety of fish prepared five different ways: boiled, fried, grilled, steamed and garlicky. With the interior of a Gulf Coast fishing camp and the exterior of a … well, shack, Joe’s is famous for barbecued Dungeness, king and snow crab. Reservations recommended for large parties. Lunch and dinner daily. Credit cards. $$
PJ’S COFFEE & TEA
1532 Robert E. Lee Blvd. (UNO Lakefront) 283-6686
See "Citywide" listing for restaurant description.

RED STEER GRILL
124 Lake Marina Ave. 283-4582
Landlubbers can round up their favorites with a menu that features steaks served sizzling, baby back ribs, brisket served on platters or in po-boys and a half-dozen different half-pound freshly ground hamburgers. Other tastes are satisfied with chicken dishes and a host of seafood favorites, both baked and fried. No reservations. Lunch and dinner daily. Credit cards. $$

RUSSELL’S MARINA GRILL
8555 Pontchartrain Blvd. 282-9999
If you and the clan are in the mood for some family-style feasting, then this Lakefront spot is the perfect order. Start things off with their famed batter-fried onion mum appetizer. A top entree choice is barbecued yellowfin tuna. Breakfast items are always available, including the popular chicken, spinach, and onion egg-white omelette with homemade salsa. Reservations accepted. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night daily. Credit cards. $

WEST END CAFE
8536 Pontchartrain Blvd. 288-0711
It might be cold outside this upcoming winter, but the West End Cafe has a recipe to keep you warm inside. Start with a cup of gumbo, Creole crab bisque or vegetable soup. Daily specials offer a variety of choices; stop by on Monday for lobster night and Wednesday for prime rib. Reservations accepted. Lunch and dinner daily, breakfast Saturday and Sunday. Credit cards. $
WOLFE’S OF NEW ORLEANS
7224 Pontchartrain Blvd. 284-6004
www.wolfesofneworleans.com
Wolfe’s was Bon Appetit’s pick for best new formal restaurant in New Orleans last year. This fall brings a chili-glazed, double-cut pork chop with jalapeno and sweet corn polenta, homemade chorizo and ancho reduction. Start your meal with this appetizer: sweet potato duck sausage, seared foie gras and kiln-dried cherry reduction. Reservations recommended. Lunch Thursday and Friday, dinner Monday through Saturday. Credit cards. $$
