FALL RESTAURANT GUIDE BY NEIGHBORHOOD
10.30.01

CAFE DEGAS
3127 Esplanade Ave. 945-5635
Cafe Degas is one of few New Orleans restaurants where the management is wise enough to heat and air-condition the al fresco dining. While you absorb that tip, think also about housemade pates, seared hanger steaks and creme brulee. French onion soup is prepared in the classic manner: beefy broth, soft crouton and sharp melted cheese. Reservations recommended. Lunch Tuesday through Saturday, dinner nightly, brunch Sunday. Credit cards. $$

CC’S GOURMET COFFEEHOUSE
2800 Esplanade Ave. 482-9865
See "Citywide" listing for restaurant description.

ESPLANADE RESTAURANT
3443 Esplanade Ave. (Park Esplanade Apartments) 821-8939
Daily specials feature innovative comfort foods such as paneed trout with fettuccine, and the eggplant Vincent: deep-fried eggplant filled with seafood and cooked in a butter-cream sauce. On Tuesday, $8.95 gets you a buffet with choices that include hand-carved roast beef and fried chicken. There are seafood specials on Friday and all-you-can eat catfish on Saturday. Reservations accepted. Lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday. Credit cards and checks. $$

GABRIELLE RESTAURANT
3201 Esplanade Ave. 948-6233
Gabrielle Chef Greg Sonnier has received the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence two years running. Aside from his enthusiastic wine selection, Sonnier specializes in housemade sausage, ultra-comforting desserts and bold, international flavors. There’s a mixed sausage grill on Gabrielle’s dinner menu, as well as a slow-roasted duck with exotic mushrooms and orange-sherry sauce over vermicelli noodles. Reservations recommended. Dinner Tuesday through Saturday. Credit cards. $$$

INDIGO
2285 Bayou Road 947-0123
After a blockbuster opening last winter, Indigo is settling into another routine this fall with a new chef. Reserve a seat for sampling Chef Tad Duncan’s newest creations, which could include a cane syrup-poached duck breast with cornbread pudding and foie gras sauce. This fall’s featured salad boasts grilled octopus, shaved fennel, frisee and orange vinaigrette. Reservations recommended. Dinner Tuesday through Saturday. Credit cards. $$

LIUZZA’S BY THE TRACK
1518 N. Lopez St. 943-8667
If you can’t settle a craving here, you’re in the wrong town. Liuzza’s serves deep, dark seafood gumbo, garlic buttery barbecue shrimp po-boys, a Reuben to take on all Reubens, frosty mugs of Barq’s and homemade salad dressings. This Liuzza’s quits dinner service fairly early but continues to pour beer into cold, bulbous mugs until the neighborhood kids go home. No reservations. Lunch and dinner Monday through Friday, lunch Saturday. Credit cards. $

LOLA’S
3312 Esplanade Ave. 488-6946
BYOB to this cozy favorite on tree-lined Esplanade Avenue. Garlic shrimp will take your breath away, while paellas are prepared with tons of fresh seafood: scallops, calamari, mussels and Gulf fish. Start off with ceviche, mussels in vinaigrette or heady garlic soup. Dinner daily. Checks and cash. $$

WHOLE FOODS MARKET
3135 Esplanade Ave. 488-6946
If you’re on a health kick, feeling bohemian, harboring environmental concern or just plain hungry, then Whole Foods has you covered. Their aisles are stocked with organic juices, blue corn chips, pesticide-free veggies and soy milk. The deli case offers an array of sandwiches, hot plate lunches and fresh salads (such as garlic kale). Healthful muffins, cookies and scones stock the bakery shelves. No reservations. Open daily. Credit cards and checks. $
