FALL RESTAURANT GUIDE BY NEIGHBORHOOD
10.30.01

ANGELO BROCATO’S
214 N. Carrollton Ave. 486-0078
New Orleanians have multiple reasons to count their culinary blessings; Brocato’s is one of them. Drop in for a scoop of housemade hazelnut ice cream, Italian fig cookies, cannoli, spumoni or cream puffs. Press your nose against glass jars of over-sized jelly beans, imported licorices and other gummy candies. Order an espresso and watch the world walk into this Sicilian-owned haven for sweets. No reservations. Open weekdays until 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday until 10:30 p.m. Credit cards. $

BANGKOK CUISINE
4137 S. Carrollton Ave. 482-3606
It’s always reassuring to dine at a restaurant that hosts a constant stream of doctors and nurses. Besides that, an inventive Thai menu, fresh ingredients and super spices draw top notice here. For appetizers, sample the chicken satay, country duck dumplings or delicately fried tofu cubes with cucumber-cilantro vinaigrette. Oysters with basil or chili sauces and pad Thai are reliable stand-bys. Reservations accepted. Lunch weekdays, dinner nightly. Credit cards. $

BEACHCORNER BAR & GRILL
4905 Canal St. 488-7357
Beachcorner is one of Mid-City’s few late-night grills. Before tucking away to bed, fill up with the 10-oz. Beachburger, served with mushrooms or cheese on white or wheat bread with all the dressings and a pickle spear. If you must stray from the beefy course, the house recommends a grilled tuna steak sandwich between sides of a bun or atop a salad. No reservations. Lunch, dinner and late-night daily. Credit cards. $

BENNACHIN
133 N. Carrolton Ave. 486-1313
Why is a meal at Bennachin so invigorating? Perhaps it’s the health-friendly menu standing among the fast food trappings of Carrollton Avenue. Or maybe it’s the exotic West African cuisine unmatched in New Orleans. In any case, menu choices include a long list of vegetarian dishes, including the regulars’ favorite jama jama (sauteed spinach); there are more entrees like steamed fish and baked chicken served with coconut rice and fried ripe plantains. Reservations recommended. Lunch weekdays, dinner Monday through Saturday. Credit cards. $
